Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking applicants for various faculty positions at our forthcoming Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) location in Melbourne, Florida. Our forthcoming additional location will reside on the Florida Tech campus, located on Florida’s eastern Space Coast just 70 miles south of Orlando.

• This faculty position in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at the Florida location is anticipated to start in April of 2024.
• Hiring is contingent upon the College’s final approval from its accrediting and licensing bodies.
• The ideal applicant for this position will spend approximately one year at the New Mexico (NM) Campus and then transition to the Florida campus in the spring of 2024.

Burrell College is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico on the campus of New Mexico State University and, if approved by all appropriate entities, includes a forthcoming additional location in Melbourne, Florida on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology. The College has been granted permission by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) to recruit to the Florida campus. Other required approvals could be received as soon as the late summer of 2023.

Summary:

The College seeks applications from experienced and enthusiastic professionals for the position of Faculty, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) and if qualified a potential of Division Head of OMM.

We are searching for a motivated faculty member that enjoys teaching medical students for the first class of medical students at the Florida location on the Florida Institute of Technology campus. The position is a full or part-time, 12-month faculty position in the division of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, in the Clinical Medicine department.

Teaching experience is favored, but new graduates are also encouraged to apply. Lecture presentations and teaching student labs are equally shared by all faculty across years one-three of the curriculum in both locations. The ideal candidate will be well prepared to engage students in a traditional lecture and lab setting and to work within the faculty as a team member. This is a very collaborative position as the candidate will be teaching with other OMM faculty.

The candidate should be a person who is passionate about teaching, creative curricular development and enjoys working with faculty members and medical students. The candidate is expected to collaborate in the development and implementation of competency-based OMM assessments. They also work in conjunction with the appropriate Course Directors, Department Chairs, and Assoc./Assist. Deans to ensure these experiences align with curricular needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Instruction first, second, and third-year osteopathic medical students
  • Development board-style (COMLEX) exam questions.
  • Participation in student mentoring and advising.
  • Participation in curricular development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Classroom instruction
  • Preparation of asynchronous learning materials and/or lecture recordings

• The ability to perform and teach osteopathic techniques of Muscle Energy, High-Velocity Low-Amplitude, Counterstrain, Facilitated Positional Release, Myofascial Release, Balanced Ligamentous Tension, Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine, and Still technique.
• Responsible for interviewing prospective osteopathic medical students.

• Monitor the consistency and quality of assessment and examination.
• Provide service to the institution, community, and profession.

• Possess sufficient analytical and computer skills to manage teaching materials on the Learning Management System and Microsoft Office.
• Participation in scholarly activities and research activities is encouraged.
• Promotes an appropriate climate for creativity, collaboration, inquiry, and diversity, and the ability to work with people from all backgrounds consistent with the mission of the institution.

Minimum Qualifications for OMM Faculty:

• Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree (D.O. degree)
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in OMM

Minimum Qualifications for OMM Division Head:

• All the qualifications for OMM Faculty in addition to:
• Three years of full-time faculty experience
• An active medical license
• Active board certification from the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM) or a Certificate of Special Proficiency in OMM (C-SPOMM)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in student education of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
• Interest in curricular design and implementation with prior experience in course development and education methodology preferred.
• Willingness to learn and develop as an educator with some of our experienced educators.

About the Florida Campus:

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (“the College”), founded in 2013, is in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is accredited by Commission on Osteopathic Accreditation (COCA). The College’s proposed additional location in Melbourne, Florida, is a four-year osteopathic medical school with 100 students per class. The first class, subject to approval by the COCA, is scheduled for a July 2024 matriculation. Like its campus in Las Cruces, New Mexico, which has an affiliation with New Mexico State University, the proposed Melbourne location will reside on the campus of Florida Tech University, a private STEM-focused university. For the past three years, the College has operated a regional academic center in Florida for clinical clerkship rotations. Based on the success of these rotations, and the support of the medical community and community stakeholders, the College’s board of trustees decided to pursue the new four-year campus in Florida.

Melbourne, Florida:

The City of Melbourne lies along the Indian River Lagoon, a vast estuary loved by boaters, anglers, and those who just enjoy its quiet beauty. On the other side of the river, a portion of the city lies on a barrier island with many beach parks offering even more fun in the sun. Melbourne is just south of Cape Canaveral — home to the Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral. You can watch launches from almost any point in the city or take a short drive up to the space center to get close to the action. While up there, you can visit Port Canaveral — an active shipping port with daily departures of cruise ships and deep-sea fishing boats.
