Outdoor Summer Camp Teacher Job at Sunbeam Nature School

Sunbeam Nature School Petaluma, CA 94952

$22 - $28 an hour

Seeking a Summer Camp Teacher at Sunbeam Nature School in Petaluma, CA.

We invite you to be part of our growing educational project! Our mission is simple: support families in getting young children outside and playing while we steward the land, tend to animals, and participate in the cycles of life. We are doing earth-based and play-based education, and we need an energetic team member to join us as our summer school-age camps facilitator, 9-1 M-F. We can extend this position to include helping with the afternoon extended care of our preschool program, and facilitating school-age classes and camps in the fall semester and beyond.

Position to be filled no later than June 2, 2023.

Hours:
Monday - Friday 8:30am - 1:30pm; full time until 4:30 available too

Philosophy: Our programs are rooted in love and respect for young children and for our community. Our core values are movement, play, relationships, and inquiry in nature. We are a fully outdoors, bilingual Spanish-immersion school inspired by social constructivist models of education such as Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, and Forest Schools. Our vision is a liberated curriculum of child-centered, co-authored learning, restorative justice, creative expression, and decolonization.

We embrace risk-taking, learning through mistakes, questions, and problems. We believe that our main role is to connect with each child. We guide, observe, and offer support or new perspectives as the child interacts with their environment. Therefore, the “teacher” is a Collaborator, one who values the process of learning as a means to build dispositions toward greater engagement.

Location: We are a 2-acre farm in west Petaluma, CA. We take care of sheep, chickens, guinea pigs, and we grow food too. We spend most of our time outdoors with some respite taken in the barns for rest, shelter from the elements, and caring for our guinea pigs and doing projects. It is important that applicants love being outside and feel a sense of wonder in nature. Candidates must be willing to grow a tolerance to all kinds of weather elements. We prefer that you have a background in childcare, education, camps, outdoor or nature education, gardening, ranching, biology, ecology, movement, dance, or other creative discipline that integrates mind and body.

School Culture: Social, emotional and physical safety are our top priorities. We engage in a culture of listening; we use responsive, positive, non-shaming language to guide children through challenges. We build our program around the child’s needs rather than expecting them to conform to our needs. We hope to hire a collaborator who is comfortable leading, guiding, organizing, and taking initiative as well as comfort with learning, following, and growing. Diverse applicants are strongly encouraged to apply, and Spanish language skills are a huge plus. We are a start-up environment; we find that those who are motivated and take initiative do well in our setting.

COVID Safety:
● Anyone with symptoms must stay home and get tested.
● Employees must be vaccinated.

  • are energetic and prepared to play active games with the children, lift/carry children, and move outdoor furniture or materials when needed.
  • are prepared to take lead on planning, prepping, and implementing a cohesive 4-hour routine with a balance of planned activities and unstructured play with children ages 4-8 years old.
  • have confidence communicating and collaborating with coworkers and director; you are prepared to communicate and build relationships with parents and caregivers.
  • are prepared to document and make note of children’s play, behaviors, and learning developments.
  • are willing to observe, reflect and make meaning of the children’s ideas and play with the goal of extending and deepening their engagement.
  • are a lifelong learner who understands the importance of taking risks and making mistakes as part of the learning process.
  • are willing to use various technological platforms for communicating with staff and parents (Brightwheel, Google Drive, Slack).

How to apply: Please email a resumé along with a cover letter that states why you are interested in the position and what qualities you bring to the community. Please offer some afternoons or evenings within the next week that you can be available for a video interview.
