NATURE OF WORK
This is a specialized security and protective and supportive work in the operation of municipal park and recreation facilities.
Work involves responsibility for the prevention and detection of crime and maintenance of law and order within assigned park and recreation facilities. Employee must be able to act without direct supervision, using independent judgment and discretion in emergency situation; however, duties are performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulation. General and special instructions and assignment are received from a supervisor, who evaluates performance through observation and review of reports.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Enforces department rules and regulations in a manner that contributes toward deterrence of violations; prevents vandalism and destruction of parks and recreation properties;
- Patrols designated parks and recreation facilities to prevent and discover crime.
- Notifies the Police Department as to any noted irregularities.
- Establishes traffic and crowd control at public gatherings in park and recreation facilities; maintains order; and performs other supportive services at special events (i.e. parking, barricades, traffic cones, etc.).
- Give advice on parks and recreation regulations to the public; provides general facility information and direction; maintains information on public park events; and prepares incident reports and related documentation.
- Make determinations and interpretations regarding reservations for specific facilities and areas of parks; resolves conflicts over the use of facilities such as multiple bookings; and assists the public with special needs such as additional tables moved to shelters, etc.
- Inspects all facilities on a regular basis and prepares required documentation; makes recommendations for facility needs and capital improvements.
- Provides direction for the cleanup of park areas such as collecting trash, emptying trash barrels, sweeping shelters, and cleaning restrooms on an as needed basis.
- Keeps records and reports as required.
- Advises on the condition of the playing fields as required.
- Substitutes as a Facility Attendant on occasion.
- Distributes maintenance or recreation supplies as needed.
- Observes, documents, and reports on other employees’ performance.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school/vocational school or a G.E.D. equivalent.
- PROOF OF HIGHEST FORM OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
EXPERIENCE
- One (1) year of work experience providing customer service to the public preferably as a security guard.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
- Physical strength to perform manual labor.
- Must be able to effectively deal with the public in difficult or emergency situations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment
- Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions: varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions. Tasks are occasionally performed at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may not be accessible to the physically handicapped.
Sensory
- The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
Physical
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools.
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor
- Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

- Knowledge of ordinances pertaining to leisure services and departmental regulations.
- Knowledge of basic human relations techniques.
- Ability to meet the public effectively to give information regarding park facilities and regulations and to ensure the safety and welfare of visitors.
