Job Summary
The patient safety attendant provides direct, constant patient observation for the purpose of providing a safer environment for those patients considered to be at risk of harming self or others
Essential Functions
- Provides constant observation of specific patients, as ordered by the physician
- Focuses observations on efforts to prevent harm to patient or others, including prevention of patient falls or purposeful self-harm
- Demonstrates understanding and uses specific techniques with their communication and body language to de-escalate/calm the patient, in appropriate situations
- Immediately alerts other staff, using call light or staff-assist emergency light or other means, if an at-risk patient attempts to get out of bed despite sitter attempts (verbal, physical) to stop
- Reports changes in patient behavior or condition to nursing staff
- Demonstrates understanding and appropriately performs hand hygiene and utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE), when required, during periods of constant observation
- Documents patient activity and observations made during the period of constant observation, with documentation occurring at a specific, regular frequency (i.e., every 15 minutes)
- Recognizes customer- service opportunities during the period of constant observation, positively impacting patient/family/significant-other/support-person/etc. satisfaction with care and services
- Presents self professionally and possesses good people skills
- If trained (must pass video surveillance competency), will sit in video surveillance room
- Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission, and abide by the Values of the organization
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
