The City's next Police Officer is an approachable, resourceful and driven individual who prioritizes community relations and provides excellent service to the public. The ideal candidate has completed two to four years of P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement training, is eligible or has obtained a Police Officer's License issued by the Minnesota Police Officer Standards within a reasonable amount of time, has a valid Minnesota Driver's License, and it is preferred to find a candidate who is fluent in a language other than English that is prevalent in the City of Richfield. Selected candidates will be required to undergo a thorough medical and psychological examination and background investigation.

There are hiring incentives available to candidates who have at least one year of full-time licensed police officer experience as described below:

Sign-on Bonus: We are offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus to lateral officer candidates who have been employed as a full-time police officer within the last 12 months, with at least one-year of full-time licensed police officer experience. $2,500 will be paid upon successful completion of the field training program, and $2,500 will be paid upon successful completion of the probationary period (one year).

Prior Service Credit : Lateral police officer candidates hired as a Police Officer who have at least two (2) years prior service as a sworn peace officer during the five (5) year period immediately preceding his/her hire date as a Richfield Police Officer, shall start at Step 3 of the contractual wage scale ($78,818.76 annually). In addition, lateral officer candidates have the following earning potential:
  • $930.00 dollars per year for uniform allowance (after 1 year).
  • $275.00 dollars per month when assigned to investigations.
  • Eligible officers can earn up to $363.00 dollars per month for college incentive pay (after 4 years) depending on the number of college semester credits they have earned.
  • All contractual overtime at 1 1/2 times your current pay rate.

Hiring Wage Depends on Experience/ Qualifications: Consideration will be given for special assignments previously held, such as SWAT, size of the agency the candidate is transferring from and their annual calls for service. Based upon the candidate's prior experience and education, they will be eligible to receive compensation in line with their relevant background and skills.

Leave Time: Lateral officers will receive 24 hours of front-loaded vacation time and 24 hours of front-loaded personal leave time. With department approval, lateral officers may be placed on the vacation accrual schedule recognizing up to six years of prior service.

Patrol Scheduling: Lateral police officer candidates hired as a Police Officer will be assigned to the patrol division throughout field training. This is a great opportunity for new officers to experience our 12 hour patrol shifts (6AM - 6PM and/or 6PM – 6AM). We also have a 12 hour mid-shift (2PM – 2AM). The benefit of these scheduling schemes is that officers have every other weekend off (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Field Training Program : The Richfield Police Department recognizes the importance of previous law enforcement experience. Based on this previous experience, the training academy and field training process will be modified to best reflect this prior experience. In addition, consideration will be given for special assignments previously held such as SWAT, defensive tactics instructor, field training officer and/or any other specialized training.

Nature of Work: Responsible for responding to emergencies, for the enforcement of laws and ordinances and for the protection of life and property.

Job Duties

  • Assists in the investigation of criminal offenses.
  • Assists in the investigation of vehicle crashes.
  • Enforces traffic laws.
  • Performs crime prevention activities and actively works with community.
  • Patrols the City to prevent and detect crimes.
  • Builds key relationships in the community and responds to requests for assistance.
  • Prepares written reports on incidents investigated.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure Richfield is an equitable, inclusive and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision and core values.
  • Performs other police and public safety work as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a High School Diploma or General Education Development Certificate (GED).
  • Completion of a two to four year P.O.S.T.-certified law enforcement training.
  • Must have a Police Officer’s license issued by the Minnesota Police Officer Standards and Training Board.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with personal computers (PC) and different operating systems.
  • Law enforcement and/or non-law enforcement volunteer experience.
  • One year or more of full-time licensed Police Officer experience.
  • Experience in a similar industry.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese or other non-English language(s).


CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE

  • Candidates will be subjected to a thorough medical and psychological examination and background investigation.
  • Officers appointed must successfully complete a minimum of 14 weeks Field Training.
