Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a world-leading Industrial Gases company, has an immediate opening for a Process Safety Engineer in our Houston, TX office.
The successful candidate will become a member of the Hydrogen Refueling Systems team of the Standard Plant Products group supporting the Hydrogen for Mobility business area. The role has global responsibility and will interface closely with the global Process Safety Engineering team for support. The Process Safety team’s mission is to “Develop process safety standard, tools, programs, training and work processes and help in implementing them on a global basis to comply with corporate process safety risk criteria and policies.”
This job responsibilities will focus on hydrogen fueling station equipment and siting, small hydrogen production units, hydrogen transfills, and fleet equipment. Special emphasis is placed on new and emerging market technologies that require hydrogen. The individual will support both product development as well as project execution activities.
During the engineering and execution phase of a project, the Process Safety Engineer will work as part of the project team providing appropriate deliverables, leadership, guidance, or information to other engineering and design disciplines, and supporting the commissioning and startup of the plant. During the operation phase, the process safety engineer will support the operating team to implement Process Safety Management where required.
The Process Safety Engineer will possess the skills to lead Hazard Reviews, Qualitative risk analysis, Quantitative risk analysis, Mechanical integrity consultation, Safety instrumented system analysis, Management of change, Process safety management, Pre-startup safety reviews, and Security vulnerability assessments.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Lead and/or facilitate Process Hazard Reviews for projects and operating facilities to ensure adequate safeguards and recommend additional safeguards as required to meet safety targets.
- Provide Process Safety input into product development efforts for all H2 related products in team. Support creation of generic product documentation that can be used for project execution and bid development.
- Conduct specialized risk studies, including quantified risk analysis in conjunction with the global team for company risk assessment or regulatory requirements.
- Provide global process safety consulting support and recommend optimal solutions to the Hydrogen for Mobility engineering, operations, and commercial teams.
- Assist in interpretation of national and local Process Safety Regulatory/Code requirements for the applicable Region where the facility is located. Assist in assessment or review for regulatory and permitting process.
- Participate in site reviews to evaluate third party exposure and perform Site Vulnerability Assessment for projects.
- Travel to site in support of commissioning and start-up required. Typical Travel is approximately 10%.
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 3-4 years’ work experience in Gas, Petrochemicals, Chemical or related industries in process engineering or plant engineering.
- Minimum of 2 year of experience in process safety
- Experience with consequence modeling (PHAST), risk quantification (LOPA) and Hazard Review documentation is preferred.
- Experience and understanding of process engineering deliverables such as P&ID’s, safety relief demand scenarios, and basic function of unit operations is required.
- Experience with instrumentation, process controls, and electrical design is preferred.
- Good leadership skills, good engineering problem-solving skills, good interpersonal and communication skills, and enthusiasm about the job mission.
- Hydrogen equipment experience is preferred.
