Production Manager Job at Great Lakes Woodworking (GLW)
The GLW team is in search of a great Production Manager to lead our Production crew on a daily basis and set us up for a strong 2023. We specialize in Custom Commercial Millwork, specifically for retail industry brands. We are an international supplier, meaning we ship our products all over North America and even the rest of the world on a regular basis. We've been in business and steadily busy since 1984.
This specific job requires production planning as well as day to day management of 20-30 production employees. You'll be responsible to oversee:
- Machining (2 CNC machines, a Beamsaw, and several other large pieces of machinery)
- Assembly (10-15 assemblers/cabinet builders)
- Finishing (2 full sized spray booths, with 3-4 finishing employees doing prep and spray)
- SPRI - Shipping, Packaging, Receiving and Inventory of all raw materials, components and finished goods
We're looking for someone able to own all of the following key areas:
- Both Lead and Manage the entire production team, leveraging the supervisors and Project Leads already in place
- Production scheduling and planning, with an eye towards labor efficiencies
- Capacity planning - managing commitments and capacities against project timelines. Balancing maximizing production output while also prioritizing long term care and development of our production team members.Working very closely with multiple points of contact within Project Management and Purchasing to coordinate all production timelines, commitments, ship dates, material deliveries, etc.
- Take the lead on plant safety, ensuring we maintain high safety standards, OSHA compliance, and any other necessary standards
- Machinery, technical optimization - layout of machines within the production floor, preventative maintenance, upgrades and investments to improve production efficiencies
Preferred experience, background and proven abilities:
- Production/manufacturing experience a must - preferably in a high mix, low volume, job-shop type of environment, where every month has you producing things you've never produced before.
- Millwork experience, woodworking knowledge - not required but extremely valuable if you have worked in cabinet shops, furniture production, architectural millwork shops or any other custom carpentry environment.
- Other (non woodworking) technical knowledge that will be highly valued:Blue prints, schematics, programming, CNC/3d Modeling/CAM/CAD
Metalworking, Spray finishes
Shipping, receiving, packaging - Logistics management and best practices
Manufacturing Machinery familiarity
- Production planning and management:Lean manufacturing, Kaizen, Toyota Production method, etc
Looking for someone with some proven experience at optimizing, removing waste, implementing new systems, processes and procedures, improving culture to reduce labor and material costs
- Leadership skills - able to inspire, communicate, hold accountable, develop and strengthen teams of 20-30 individuals, spanning a few different departments.
