Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The appointee will manage a program of community-based cancer education/outreach and research in support of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) under Associate Director for COE, Dr. Cheryl L. Knott. The Program Manager plays a key role in the management of ongoing cancer community outreach and engagement projects, within the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park. The Manager will have primary responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of the Office of COE. The Manager must have a clear understanding of community-based participatory research (CBPR) processes and experience. He/she will be responsible for working directly with organizations and individuals in the Cancer Center’s catchment area, a 10-county region throughout Central Maryland, which includes Baltimore City. Project activities will take place both on the campus and in community settings.

Duties include:
  • Lead the development, management, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing Office of COE projects (e.g., community cancer health ambassador trainings; community
  • research forum discussions; community data collection; dissemination of cancer research).
  • Play a lead role in developing and implementing cancer educational workshops and activities to be conducted throughout the catchment area.
  • Maintain relationships with Community Advisory Board members, recruit new Community Advisory Board members, and preside over regular Community Advisory Board meetings.
  • Attend and participate in annual meetings of the Community Cancer Impact Forum.
  • Lead activities to recruit community members to engage with cancer-relevant research (e.g., community advocates; study-specific Community Advisory Board members; community research forum participants).
  • Oversee all data collection, management (including participant confidentiality), and analysis at various project levels and via different media (e.g., paper-and-pencil, online, via phone). Support Office of COE needs assessment activities.
  • Develop and foster community partnerships throughout the catchment area, to support implementation of cancer education/outreach/research activities.
  • Coordinate project meetings, conference calls, and project-specific events involving a multidisciplinary team of investigators, community partners, consultants, and students.
  • Monitor progress in accordance with COE metrics project timeline. Regularly report COE metrics for evaluation purposes.
  • Develop and submit COE reports on a regular (e.g., annual) basis.
  • Develop and regularly update educational materials (e.g., cancer educational brochures, Community Cancer Resource Guide).
  • Develop targeted materials and presentations for community cancer education/outreach activities.
  • Manage all project inquiries and communications from media, university officials, the Institutional Review Board, the funding agency, and the community-at-large.
  • Provide fiscal management support by serving as the financial custodian, reviewing monthly financial statements from subcontractors, and participating in monthly project-wide financial meetings.
  • Distribute and track payments and incentives to Community Advisory Board members and others engaging in COE activities.
  • Supervise and appropriately delegate action items to student researchers, interns, and graduate research assistants.
  • Participate in interview process for COE hiring (e.g., hourly Cancer Health Ambassadors).
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student volunteers and part-time staff.
  • Develop regular COE newsletters and social media posts. Keep COE web site up to date.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Master’s in public health or related discipline.

Experience:
  • 4 or more years of experience in project management.
  • Experience making videos using Apple software.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with SPSS for data analysis.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Evidence of research potential such as peer-reviewed publications.
  • The ability to travel localy.
  • The ability to occasionally perform evening and weekend duties.

  • Experience in community-based research
  • Experience working in health disparities research and working with medically underserved populations.
  • Endnote experience.
  • A strong background in research is desirable.

Physical Demands
The employee will be required to perform routine office duties, lift boxes containing supplies and recruitment materials, use a personal vehicle for local travel within the region, and attend meetings in other buildings on campus. Performing these duties may necessitate walking across campus and partner sites, including going up stairs.
