Summary – basic function of the role
Highly motivated, energetic innovation leader that collaborates with a diverse, global, group of engineers, product managers and designers to help identify customer unmet needs, and assure innovative solutions are based on enterprise-wide design principles. The Design Engineering Program Manager uses a variety of frameworks and processes to encourage creative, forward-thinking, value-added solutions for the organization.
In this role, the Design Engineering Program Manager will be chartered to accomplish two primary areas of work: The first area will be driving new methods of thinking, creative problem solving, and solution strategies as a champion of user-centered innovation for both our end users, as well as members within our organization. The second area of focus will be a technical innovator, supporting design objectives collected during the front end of product development and building out critical design elements that can be translated into representative prototypes.
Shift: Monday – Friday; 8 – 4:30 pm or 8:30 – 5:00 pm; flexible
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and build self-directed high performance project teams. Monitor progress of work, using appropriate measures and KPIs, adjust behaviors and work as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.
- Plan and schedule work using various project management methodologies (waterfall, kanban, agile, job model). Ability to work fluidly across the various methodologies.
- Assess and analyze vulnerabilities and risks to success for project activities. Develop appropriate mitigation plans, raise attention, and escalate areas of concern outside the team’s ability to manage.
- Develop appropriate financial models and project budgets. Manage activities and people to these budgets with successful outcomes.
- Ensure high stakeholder engagement, manage relationships and (changing) expectations with relevant stakeholders during execution and develop actions to support them.
- Choose appropriate stages to reflect on team performance and outcomes, lead retrospective sessions in driving on-going continuous improvements.
- Lead change in business process and practice, as necessary to drive better business outcomes.
- Build and nurture a culture of Design and Innovation throughout the organization. Leverage Design Thinking principles to enhance outcomes cross functionally.
- Drive success by coaching and mentoring internal stakeholders, by supporting and leading key initiatives and driving teams to user-centered outcomes.
- Enhance and maintain a global design and innovation process to ensure projects are based on user-centered needs and opportunities.
- Investigate concepts and technologies that can be used in development in a future state.
- Work with Industrial Design to uncover and build out novel solutions to deliver into production intent designs.
- Lead others to create physical prototypes that represent accurate design directions to gain alignment and direction with our engineering teams, choosing appropriate fidelity level to mitigate design risk.
- Develop stakeholder relationships and build networks to achieve short- and long-term goals.
- Travel globally as needed.
Skills and Competencies
- Front End Innovation (FEI) experience, actively participating on a front-end development team for at least 5 years.
- Ability to succeed in a global cross-functional environment, driving design outcomes across multiple facets of the company.
- Demonstrate a keen understanding of the New Product Development process and how decisions in the front end directly affect product outcomes. Adapt at leading senior leadership formal reviews of project activities and risk.
- Excellent storytelling capabilities, including both verbal and visual means.
- Ability to sell across the organization, developing compelling value propositions and evangelizing them effectively.
- Strong consumer centric approach to design, demonstrating strong design thinking principles and methodologies.
- High financial acumen, with abilities to create business level models that effectively illustrate a strong value proposition.
- Experience in regulatory environments with ability to navigate regulatory agency requirements to certify new products, prior to market launch.
- Experience working in a global Program Management Office (PMO).
- Versed in Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent 3D software tools.
- Proficient in Miro, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word. Superior skills in Excel are a plus.
- Strong skills in reporting & analytics in PowerBI or equivalent
- Strong understanding of mechanical design (preferably in industrial tools), and high exposure to electromechanical architectures including electronic components with firmware.
- Pro-active & self-directed in undergoing continuous learning in technical know-how and hands-on.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to communicate concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences including executive management.
- Competencies: Design thinking principles, strategic thinking, change leadership, flexible and agile to change, highly collaborative, innovative thinking, and promoter.
Education and Experience
Education Requirements:
- Relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering or Business Administration, or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years of project management experience in a technical project-based environment.
Certification Requirements:
- Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI or equivalent, Agile certification is a plus
Physical Demands
Employee may have to lift documents/work materials up to 30 pounds in weight. Employee will have to be able to walk/climb to a variety of primary work locations, including traveling by air/auto to remote sites. Employee will need to listen, understand, and speak with team members in person, telephonically, and electronically at all levels within a diverse workforce and with supported organizations. Employee is able to work in front of a personal computer and telephone for long periods of time.
Work Environment
Primary work environment is temperature controlled office setting but may also be visiting different manufacturing facilities where following appropriate safety protocols at the location would be required. Employee will be exposed to low levels of noise in an office.
