Job Summary: Project Development Engineer

This individual will be responsible for managing the technical evaluation and diligence for new opportunities and the eventual design and permitting of (+500 kW) solar electric systems, battery systems and as directed on other distributed energy and efficiency projects. The position will provide support to the Business Development department.

The Project Development Engineer is responsible for identifying the most appropriate technical and material solutions or other variables to optimize the system proposals. Deliverables such as confirmation of equipment specifications, concept design drawings, site evaluations, interconnection and single line diagrams, and other supporting detail as required will be managed by this position. This position will also work with internal resources, sub-contracting Professional Engineers, the Customer, and local regulatory entities to create a design that meets the requirements of all stake holders.

Job Functions

Attend site qualification visits to collect information required to complete the proposal process, design and permitting of the required energy systems.

Develop structural and electrical conceptual design, including technology selection, layouts and drawings, electrical and roof interface for solar electric systems and other energy systems that meet all national, local, and stakeholder requirements for submission of proposals.

Perform technical due diligence for RFPs or similar as required by official response documents. Verify or identify key requirements, to provide most appropriate solution or response.

Utilize modeling tools such as production estimating tools (PVSyst and PV Watts), and/or material optimizing methods to validate most appropriate design and material solutions. Work with other departments to provide best estimating and modeling information.

Coordinate with and manage detailed design activities from professionally licensed engineering support.

Manage the submission of drawings to the appropriate agency in order to obtain construction permits.

Coordinate the development of a bill of material for each project based on the final approved design.

Manage CAD resources and priorities to effectively meet required timelines. Maintain report to track new opportunities, for use in forecasting, updating as required.

Provide technical support and deliverables for utility specific interconnection applications and approvals, rebate applications, performance validation models or any other technical support for commercial operation.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Requires time at various projects locations.

Requires (10% at times) overnight travel, may include auto, air, rail travel.

Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication is essential.

Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle

No heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally may be required.

Work independently and with people, speaking in front of groups and with individuals, customers, management, engineers, subcontractors, manufacturers, and suppliers, etc.

Technical/Job Skill Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following minimum qualifications and have demonstrated the following technical or job skills:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred) and/or a combination of equivalent education and equivalent work experience.

Capable of performing design and development activities with multiple types of energy projects. Knowledge of the development of customer proposals, vendor agreements, and subcontractor contracts.

Effective in customer presentations, including excellent writing skills.

Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills to manage the activities required in the design and permitting of energy systems.

Good working knowledge of MS Office programs, specifically Word and Excel.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, PVSyst & Helioscope required

Professional Engineering (PE) registration, EIT or working to EIT and/or PE, plus.

If required, must meet eligibility requirements for access to government facilities, may be subject to government security
