What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Services Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). PD Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory.

Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer 1 $90,000 - $147,100

As a Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer, you will act as the lead technical representative for engineering activities related to the planning, design, execution, and closeout of projects. You will be expected to lead and manage development of projects with an integrated project team (IPT) that includes both customers, stakeholders, subject matter experts and others.

Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer 2 $99,200 - $164,100

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Nuclear Facility Project Engineer 2 performs the following duties:
  • Lead scoping and design phases.
  • Plan, forecast, and identify necessary engineering resources to support project workload requirements.
  • Review project engineering progress against approved schedules and budgets; evaluating changes; and taking corrective action when required.
  • Work with the LANL Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) representatives such as building official, fire marshal, electrical safety officer, etc. for identification of requirements, permitting, and issues resolution.
  • Application of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS), performance reporting, and variance analysis.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language.
  • Desktop automation skills required (MS Office Suite).
  • Fundamental knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
  • Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Project Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and contract language.
  • Knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties
  • described above.
  • Experience with engineering work planning, scheduling, and cost estimating.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques.
  • Working knowledge of infrastructure or utility design, codes and standards.
  • Experienced with projects in scoping, design, construction, change management, and engagement with field personnel, or a combination of these.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Engineer in Training Certificate.
  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.
  • Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards (https://engstandards.lanl.gov/index.shtml) using tools such as MS Project or Oracle P6.
  • Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects
  • Advanced degree in relevant field.
  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
