NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

We are seeking an impactful R&D Systems Engineer to join the W76-0 Navy Systems team as a Navy Experimental Reentry (NER) Flight Test Programs Systems Engineer to facilitate the Sandia National Laboratories portions of the Extended Navy Test Bed (ENTB) and Navy Reentry System (NRS) development programs. This position is part of a Strategic Partnership Project (SPP) Other Federal Agency (OFA) funded by the US Navy along with (Lockheed Martin Space, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Labs, Charles Stark Draper Lab. This position directly contributes to the design, development, and demonstration of flight test reentry experiments that impact National security needs. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing of Advanced & Exploratory Systems efforts on HOTShot, Mk7/W93, and other advanced concepts. The successful candidate concomitantly will be exposed to the technical details of the W76-1/2 & W88 ALT 370 weapon systems function, facilitate SLBM flight tests, while being part of a national team working to reinvigorate the nuclear reentry science and technology. The position requires moderate travel to DoD sites, co-contractor facilities, long-range planning meetings, and flight test project evaluations.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Interact with internal and external system engineers, component designers, and tester engineers developing creative solutions to time-critical issues that come up during RB builds
- Tackle technical and programmatic problems and pursue new and ongoing initiatives to achieve the Navy customer goals
- Partner with DoD contractors such as Lockheed Martin Space, Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Draper Laboratory (DL), and others
- Manage the provisioning of Government Furnished Equipment and Information between DOE and DoD sites
- Communicate to co-contractors and the Navy the functionality of DOE components and systems (including the Mk4A/Mk4B and Mk5 ALT 370 variants) in relation to NER/NRS Reentry Body (RB) Assemblies from a system-level perspective
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Occasional travel will be required.
Qualifications We Require
- Experience with Telemetry Systems, Flight Tests, and Systems Engineering and/or with nuclear weapon component or system design, development, production, surveillance, nuclear safety, or assessment, and/or with surveillance program (flight test, system laboratory test, component evaluations, and/or material evaluations)
- Advanced technical degree (Master’s or PhD) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline, or equivalent experience in lieu of degree which must be directly related experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
- DOE Q-level security clearance

The W76-0 Stockpile Systems Engineering teams directly support the Nuclear Deterrence mission through annual assessment of the Systems’ safety and reliability and providing design agency engineering support for the production agencies. The deployment extension of the W76-0 weapon system is a key challenge and provides great opportunities for success and freedom to innovate. We partner with technical organizations across Sandia National Laboratories, including other system groups, stockpile surveillance, materials research, science and engineering, and computational modeling and simulation, to design and execute aging, reliability, and safety studies. In addition, we partner with external stakeholders, including the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense and its contractors, Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as the Kansas City National Security Campus and Pantex Production plants, to ensure the continued success of the W76-0/Mk4 Deterrence mission.
The Navy Experimental Reentry (NER) program within the Navy Reentry Systems (NRS) program are part of Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) Other Federal Agency (OFA) funded by the US Navy. Our team provides leadership and directly contributes to the design, development, and demonstration of flight test reentry experiments that impact national security needs. We partner closely with Center 2400 to develop and test Advanced & Exploratory System efforts on HOTShot, Mk7/W93, and advanced concepts. We also have significant collaborations with external stakeholders including the Navy and NER co-contractors (Lockheed Martin Space, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Labs, Charles Stark Draper Lab) to advance the technologies in missile reentry flight programs in support of Nuclear Deterrence.

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
