Summary:
The Recreation Specialist is responsible for administrative recreation services (indoor and outdoor) to the children assigned to the Fort Bliss children's residential facility. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for ensuring the youth receive age-appropriate physical exercise and other recreational activities. They will ensure contractual requirements and client expectations are met at the on-site residential facility.

Reports to:
  • Lead Recreation Specialist.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Explains and demonstrates proper technique and use of all recreational equipment, including the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
  • Inspects recreation area for cleanliness and safety.
  • Conducts weekly safety training sessions with recreation orderlies and clerks.
  • Checks all participants in and out of the recreational facility
  • Maintains recreation department records.
  • Orders, maintains, and schedules the repair of all recreation department equipment.
  • Understands group dynamics, promotes and maintains a positive peer group culture.
  • Provides coverage for assigned staff when needed.
  • Responsible for adhering to all ORR regulations, policies and procedures, as well as other applicable regulations.
  • Provides reports to managers as required.
  • Performs duties in a safe manner. Follows the corporate safety policy. Participates and supports safety meetings, training and goals. Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility. Encourages co-workers to work safely. Identifies “close calls” and/or safety concerns to supervisory personnel. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Assists in active implementation of company initiatives to ensure compliance with OSHA VPP, ISO, JCAHO, AAAHC, and other mandated regulations/standards.
  • Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility.
  • Encourages co-workers to work safely.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in both Spanish and English.
  • High School diploma, Bachelors' in Education preferred.
  • One (1) years' experience working with children.
  • Two (2) years of experience in physical education or other related field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to sit for more than 8 hours per day
  • Ability to to work over time, if necessary
  • Ability to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders
  • Ability to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print
  • Ability to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear
  • Ability to pass a criminal background investigation
  • Clean Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) or child protective services check.
  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer and common office equipment, as well as with MS Office products required.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee may use repeated motions that include the arms, wrists, hands and/or fingers. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds unassisted and carry that weight up to 10 feet. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
