Overview
The Energy Processes & Materials Group within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks an outstanding research scientist with a strong background in organometallics, organics, materials synthesis and characterization, and electrochemical performance testing. This position is for an organic chemist, organometallic chemist, materials scientist, or electrochemist with experience in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry and electrochemistry. The primary focus of this position is to provide technical support to a growing team of scientists and engineers conducting basic and applied research and development in the field of organic redox flow batteries and related technical areas.
Responsibilities
Project work will include design, synthesis, and spectroscopic characterization of advanced organic or organometallic redox species, development of aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes, studies of the electrochemical properties and redox mechanism of the electrolytes using high throughput robotic experimental systems, and flow battery system integration and electrochemical testing. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of new flow-based energy storage technologies, including materials development, device fabrication/testing, and final product delivery, in coordination with senior scientists and the project manager. They will also prepare manuscripts for publication, present their work internally and externally at national/international conferences, and develop new ideas for funded research.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must have a Ph.D. in chemistry (organic or organometallic), materials science, chemical engineering, or other related fields.
- A strong background in the theory and practice of synthetic organic or organometallic chemistry is a must.
- Experience in the design of organic/organometallic redox molecules with related electrochemical studies is a plus.
- The candidate must have excellent problem-solving skills based on a thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms, and the ability to work safely and independently under supervision.
- Expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds (chromatography and NMR, MS, IR spectroscopy, etc.) is also required.
- The successful candidate will have demonstrated technical skills in a laboratory environment, including electrochemical characterization techniques, experimental setup, operation, and data analysis, as well as demonstrated technical communication skills.
- Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment are required.
- The candidate must have a passion for publication to disseminate the research findings. Strong publication record is a plus.
