Research Associate Job at The University of Iowa
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics at the College of Pharmacy, University of Iowa seeks a highly motivated Research Associate to join Dr. Tze Ning Hiew’s research group. This specified-term appointment is full-time for 1 year. This is an immediate opening and applications will be considered until a successful candidate is identified.
The research will focus on particle engineering strategies for the formulation of oral solid dosage forms.
Key Areas of Responsibilities
Research
- Research the literature as requested.
- Critically review the literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with other investigators.
Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations
- Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of research protocols.
- Design portions of research plan.
- Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.
Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data
- Perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.
- Assist in preparing publications and presentations.
- May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, grant applications and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.
Administrative and Project Management
- Responsible for following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.
Facilities and Equipment Management
- Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.
- Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.
- Coordinate software licenses as necessary to complete projects.
Supervision/Staffing
- Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees.
- Serve as a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students working on the project.

Education Requirement
- MS in a relevant science or engineering field (e.g., Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, etc.) prior to starting this position is required.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of 2 years of related experience in a research role.
- Demonstrated ability to apply relevant scientific principles in the pre-formulation, formulation, and manufacturing stages for oral solid dosage forms.
- Hands-on experience with lab scale milling equipment, tablet press, fluid bed processor, and spray dryer.
- Hands-on experience with basic analytical techniques such as HPLC, UV-Vis, dissolution testing, and other routine lab instruments relevant to pharmaceutical processing.
- Hands-on experience with solid form screening and instrumentation used in the characterization of pharmaceutical solids (e.g., powder XRD, DSC, TGA, PLM, DVS).
- Demonstrated expertise in various particle size analysis techniques suitable for the characterization of pellets, granules, and primary drug particles (e.g., SEM, light microscopy, laser diffraction).
- Demonstrated ability to perform data and image analyses with MATLAB or other relevant software/tools.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in diverse environments.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Expertise in addressing solubility and bioavailability issues in the development of oral pharmaceutical products.
- Hands-on experience with other lab scale pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment (e.g., high-shear granulator, roller compactor).
- Expertise in flow characterization of pharmaceutical powders (e.g., bulk and tapped densities, angle of repose).
- Working knowledge of statistical analyses relevant to pharmaceutical product development (e.g., DoE).
- Demonstrated ability to perform in-line monitoring of pharmaceutical processes (Raman, NIR) and relevant data handling, processing, and analysis.
