Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or other science related area
Work Experience:
Minimum 1-2 year lab experience working with basic research
Lab tech experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Master's degree in biology, biochemistry or molecular biology.
Work Experience: Previous lab experience working with mice and in vivo systems, presentation and writing of data, directing new lab personnel.
Skills:
Basic understanding of cell and molecular biology.
Basic knowledge of the overall sections which comprise the laboratory and each section's functions.
Competence in critical thinking, interpersonal relationships and technical skills.
Job Duties Outlined:
Conduct research on mechanisms of cancer metastasis. Coordinate lab day-to-day activities. Studies will integrate cellular and animal models, molecular and biochemical approaches, focusing on mitochondrial genetics although other project involvement is also likely.
Conduct research in cancer biology using cell biological, biochemical, genetic, and/or molecular techniques to study mitochondrial genetics and tRNA fragment biochemical and functional characterization.
Perform studies utilizing transfection, gene/protein expression through qPCR, immunoblots and gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA blots, cell culture, animal models, flow cytometry, ChIP, and/or mRNP-IP. Maintain mouse GEMM colonies and perform genotyping breeding along with in vivo mouse studies.
Attend all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and Department, attend KUCC seminars and attend regular lab meetings. Provide laboratory training for new students and fellows in the lab.
Will be expected to participate in various research projects under the guidance of the faculty supervisor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in a laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscript figures and tables and participate in publishing in peer-reviewed literature. The applicant will also read literature articles and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.
Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results, and publish their results in abstracts, manuscripts, posters. Develop and maintain lab guidelines for specific studies as directed by lab supervisor. Develop new protocols and trouble-shoot existing assays as needed. Troubleshoot technical problems as they arise, including appropriate documentation.
Order supplies and negotiate prices on lab consumables. Follow established quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures, including appropriate documentation.
Serve as appropriate lab safety person as needed. Dispose of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps and other potentially hazardous materials according to policy, and strictly adhere to safety and biosafety control procedures.
Calibrates, maintains and operates equipment keeping appropriate documentation. Reports malfunctions to supervisor.
Maintains adequate inventory of lab kits and reagents.
Coordinates daily activities and works closely with lab supervisor. Attends and presents research at lab meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
