Research Systems Engineer Job at Dartmouth College
Position Purpose
Support Department of Physics and Astronomy faculty, students and researchers in their computational research. Provides system management and software maintenance for research computer systems, research data storage and software applications. Provides consulting services on research systems and applications to all users. Assist researchers with the identification, evaluation, and purchase of new research computing systems and applications. Assists researchers with the integration of specialized hardware and software technologies for their research experiments.

Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences, computer science, mathematics, or engineering.
Experience
- Six or more years of Linux system administration experience.
- Experience with shell programming.
Skills and Knowledge
- Fluency in one or more programming languages, such as C, Fortran, or python.
- Familiar with the Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Solid understanding of high-performance computing, parallel systems, performance monitoring and optimization.
- Experience with hardware setup and modifications, including adding internal disk drives, GPUs, etc.

- Consults with all Physics and Astronomy users on the Linux operating system, network, system administration, and applications, independently answers questions, provides advice, handles user complaints, handles user and system crises.

- Evaluates, orders, installs, maintains, and removes computer systems and applications (commercial, public domain, and user-supplied software). Writes or obtains sufficient documentation. Handles software licensing issues.
