GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Research Technician will assist the lab PI (Dr. Xiqun Chen) and the lab investigators in wet lab projects investigating molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s and related diseases. The incumbent will perform experiments using animal and cellular models or human tissue samples under supervision of the lab PI and investigators, assist with general management of the lab and the protocols, coordinate with collaborators, be involved in literature search, new protocol setup and optimization, data analysis and presentation.

The position will report to the lab PI on weekly basis or whenever necessary, communicate with lab fellows and technical staff on daily basis, communicate with collaborators regularly.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under direct supervision of the lab PI (Dr. Xiqun Chen), will assist the PI and her lab investigators to investigate molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s and related disease. Specifically, s/he will be responsible for:

  • Performing experiments using cellular and mouse models of neurodegeneration, including genetic and pharmacological manipulation of the targets, behavioral tests, PCR, Western blotting, immunostaining, flow cytometry, imaging processing, neurochemical analyses.
  • Assist with data analysis and data presentation.
  • Assist with the lab general management such as animal and human protocols, biosafety protocols, lab electronic achieves, and reagents order.
  • Communication and coordination with collaborators.
  • Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs
  • Manage projects and assist with the coordination of efforts across collaborative teams

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Must be able to perform multiple tasks independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or ability to learn:
  • Lab mouse handling
  • Cell culture
  • PCR
  • Western blotting
  • Immunostaining
  • Microscopies
  • Use of statistical software
  • Data presentation and scientific writing

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree required.

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training: Neuroscience, Chemistry, Immunology, or other science related field

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: new college graduate

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Research Assistant will work in a research lab located on the Navy Yard research campus of MGH to conduct bench studies. No specific requirement for physical strength. Experiments may involve use of biosafety level 2 hazardous materials such viral vectors, neurotoxins such as MPTP, which are approved by relevant institutional authorities.
