Research Technologist 1, Otolaryngology Job at Northwestern University

Conducts related tests, procedures, and maintenance of an auditory research lab, including but not limited to: equipment (TDT system) setup and operation for ABRs, OAEs, noise exposure, etc.; animal order, care, observations, and record keeping; keeping track and ordering necessary agents, materials, tools, etc.; data collection and analysis. Basic medical science/biological background is required. Basic understanding and experience of techniques (such as the above mentioned) in auditory studies are preferred.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
  • Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
  • Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities:
    • Histology:
      • Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
      • Immunohistochemistry
      • Microscopy
    • Animal:
      • Husbandry
      • Breeding and screening transgenic mice
      • Dissections
      • Blood collection
      • Surgical procedures
      • Database management of colony
    • Other (please specify):
      • Immunostaining, confocal imaging
      • Synchrotron X-ray imaging
  • Records test results and may maintain databases.
  • Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
  • Maintains inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies

Miscellaneous

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HS diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Attention to detail, consistently displays accuracy and attention to detail
  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Willing to learn and undergo training

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree and/or experience in medical science, such as biology or chemistry

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Animal husbandry
  • Skills in auditory research and/or histology
