Brooklyn Center Elementary is seeking applicants to join our team for the 2022-23 school year as a Restorative Practices Specialist.

Position Summary: The restorative practices specialist must have a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach and philosophy when working with all people. The restorative practices specialist will work as part of a team to provide training, consultation, and service delivery to support the implementation and application of restorative justice within the school. Responsible for the active supervision of students during student contact times (regular school day and/ or out-of-school time programs). Responsible for providing safe, developmentally appropriate learning/ enrichment environment, manage student behavior, serving as a positive role model, and being a supportive adult.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support our work in developing a community grounding in restorative justice and civic education.
- Work with the Restorative Practices Coordinator and/ or Principals to ensure the execution of restorative practices.
- Conduct trauma interviews to support students and groups of students using trauma-informed training,
- Design community and individual-based interventions to help students stay connected and a part of the community.
- Restore disruptive classroom communities and group dynamics and in other settings.
- Provides school-based support for Restorative Circles and programs to support restorative discipline.
- Collaborates with other specialists for positive behavior approaches and conflict resolution.
- Collaborate with school staff to support whole-school approaches to restorative schools, restorative school discipline, and other aspects of restorative justice for the purpose of improving the outcomes for students.
- Provides active supervision of all students.
- Supervise students to ensure a safe, supportive, culturally responsive, equitable, and welcoming learning environment.
- Establish effective communication with staff, students, and families.
- Interact positively with students and promote school programs.
- Attend and advocate for students in meetings with students and families as needed.
- Reports incidents or trends to building administration.
- Ensure the safety of students, providing supervision in various activities/ locations including, but not limited to breakfast, lunch, hallways, common areas, restrooms, and activities.
- Assist with supervision in the breakfast and lunch periods and with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal of students.
- Assists in the safe and orderly conduct of school activities.
- Keeps unwanted visitors out of the building and off the grounds.
- Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Compensation: $20.01- $24.55 and competitive benefits based on the Support Professionals contract
Hours: 8 hours/ day
Duty Days: 177 working days and 8 holidays! (Based on the full school year)
Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- Associate’s degree or certification in restorative practices; sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Experience working with young people.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of best practices in building relationships with all staff, students, and stakeholder.
- Ability to work daily, in-person with a diverse team, capable of speaking English and Spanish (bilingual preferred) and build positive relationships with staff, students and parents.
- Ability to document and follow oral or written work orders from the principal.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to maintain a professional, calm and authoritative manner when challenged by students.
- Ability to use electronic devices to effectively communicate.
- Ability to be punctual and accountable for the responsibilities of the position.
Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:
- General knowledge of school district operations, expectations, policies processes, and procedures;
- General knowledge of the transportation of students;
- Knowledge of District Core Values and Mission;
- Knowledge of facilitating restorative practice interventions or other types of youth supports;
- Knowledge of positive behavior reinforcement techniques.
