Scientist I, Molecular Biologist Job at Generate Biomedicines
About Generate Biomedicines
Generate Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. Generate has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.
We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!
Generate was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $420 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 250 employees.
The Role:
Scientist I, Molecular Biologist
Position Summary:
We are seeking creative, curious, and resourceful team members who operate at the frontiers of engineering, biology, and drug discovery. Our G:Labs department is growing its effort to design and build new medicines on Generate's machine learning platform. In this position, you would be responsible for crafting novel CAR-T and other T cell-based therapies. You would design and execute experimental campaigns and would have a substantial impact on the future success of Generate's pipeline of biomedicines. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based position with a large opportunity for creativity and influence towards the direction of a rapidly growing science and technology company.
Here's how you will contribute:
- Work in a small, diverse team (wetlab + computational)
- Design and build new, more effective biomedicines including cell therapies
- Learn and apply new techniques and methodologies
- Collaborate across the company with machine learning engineers, drug discovery researchers, and bioinformatics data scientists
- Actively contribute to the creation and execution of preclinical research programs in cell therapy
- Serve as a leader and mentor in your field of expertise
Working at Generate, you would have access to world-leading technology platforms in the areas of:
- Automated liquid handling and digital microfluidics
- Droplet microfluidics for molecular and cell biology
- High-throughput cell- and protein-based library generation and screening
- Closed-loop machine learning/wetlab integration
- Protein structure prediction and determination
The Ideal Candidate will have:
Qualifications:
- Candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience will be considered
- At least 2 years of relevant scientific experience, either in industry and/or as demonstrated by an academic publication record, is required
- Technical expertise in molecular biology, including next-generation sequencing library design and analysis, is required
- Technical expertise in large-scale pooled screens, including massively parallel reporter assay or sort-seq experiments, is strongly preferred
- Technical expertise in T cell engineering, including viral or nonviral genetic manipulation, is required
- Experience working in a team-based environment is strongly preferred
- Experience in a lab automation environment preferred
- High-throughput (HTS) library generation and screening experience desired but not required
- Familiarity with bioinformatic analyses with Python or R is strongly preferred
- Ability to work in a dynamic, creative and fast-paced environment required
- Strong collaboration and communication skills required
Candidates should have hands-on experience in one or more of the following:
- Next-generation sequencing, especially in design and execution of novel NGS methods
- Molecular biology construct design and construction of large DNA/protein design sets
- Immunological assays including multi-color flow cytometry and secreted cytokine analysis
- Gene editing (knock out/knock in) in mammalian cell lines and primary cells
- CAR-T cell discovery and characterization
- High-throughput, cell-based in vitro models for immuno-oncology
