Zoetis is seeking a talented and experienced structural and computational biologist to contribute to our efforts in the Discovery Sciences and Technologies organization. This individual will partner with project teams to build therapeutic mechanisms of action through in vitro/ex-vivo assays, structure-based protein design, and computational modeling.
The successful candidate should have experience with biochemical and biophysical characterization of protein-protein interactions and relevant experience characterizing biological disease mechanisms. Familiarity with computational protein design tools, epitope mapping and molecular biology to provide actionable mechanistic insights is preferred. The candidate should be excited by research at the interface of computation, protein design, and biology, with the ability to define scientific problems and drive innovation to solve them. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. Some travel required.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Characterize biological mechanisms of action of large molecule therapeutics.
  • Develop an understanding of protein interactions and target inhibition using high- and low-resolution structural biology, biochemical/biophysical methods (CryoEM/X-ray crystallography, HDX-MS, SAXS, ITC, SPR etc).
  • Ab initio prediction of multimeric protein structures, interface identification, molecular dynamics and binding free energy calculation on HPC or cloud computing platform.
  • Collaborate across multiple disease areas and groups such as protein sciences.
  • Directly communicate with external partners for collaborations and outsourcing.
  • Contribute to and drive publications, present results at internal and external meetings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Educational background: Ph.D. in structural biology, computational biology, molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or related field; or M.S. with at least 5 years of relevant experience; or B.S with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Training or experience in biological sciences focusing on biophysical and biochemical characterization of proteins with an emphasis on resolution of large molecule structures.
  • Expertise in structural biology and other biophysical methods to understand mechanism of protein action via methods such as single particle cryo-EM, X-Ray crystallography, NMR.
  • Experience with protein modeling techniques including homology modeling, in silico protein design using tools such as Alphafold, Rosetta, MOE, Schrodinger etc.
  • Exposure to protein expression & isolation (mammalian, yeast, insect & bacterial systems), affinity chromatography, protein biochemistry and protein quantification (SDS-PAGE protein gels, Westerns, analytical SEC, ELISAs, SPR) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Linux OS (install, configure and maintain) and working in high performance computing or cloud environments is a strong plus.
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize work and work efficiently, design experiments with minimal supervision, and able work across teams remotely and face-to-face.
