Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Sr. Maintenance Mechanic for the Division of Institutional Planning and Operations.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Under general supervision,
  • Works independently in a “zone” or as the only Maintenance Mechanic on a particular campus reporting directly to a second level supervisor.
  • May guide and instruct other staff in the performance of a wide range of mechanical maintenance duties to repair and maintain equipment in good operating condition. Such duties may be based on work orders which provide little or no instruction or assistance.
  • Responsible for estimation of work and procuring appropriate materials for him/herself or the group. May guide and instruct craft trainees.
  • May perform any duties of the group.
  • Verifies results of work performed by the outside vendors.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus four years of experience performing mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair work on industrial-type motors and pumps such as water distribution, high temp and vacuum pumps.
  • Must be competent in performing complex and varied mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair work on these same types of industrial-type motors and pumps (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, etc.).
  • Successful completion of an approved training program or of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade, plus a minimum of two years experience and proven competency performing complex and varied mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair work on industrial-type motors and pumps may be substituted for the above experience.
  • A valid driver’s license with two years driving experience is necessary.
  • Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • Also requires good communication skills, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.
  • May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain a medical or religious exemption from the University will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
