I. MAJOR FUNCTIONS:
As an expert in social work practice, the senior practice associate helps to advance the established mission and goals of the association. Major functions include providing professional expertise in the specific practice areas of children and adolescents in order to guide social work practice, programs and/or advocacy. It includes networking with relevant national organizations in practice areas to shape statements, documents, and policy for consumers, organizations, and governments. The social worker participates in the development, implementation, and coordination of grant activities to help ensure compliance and develops and implements association products, practice standards, policy statements, tools; and advocacy positions; The social worker develops written information for dissemination to members and the public through hard-copy documents, web, e-mail, and social media; serving as a resource both internally and externally for projects related to practice areas of children and adolescents, responding to members, chapters, organizations, and other appropriate requests for information related to practice areas. Work is performed under general supervision.

II. BASIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Systematically collect, analyze and disseminate practice information to social workers, policymakers, organizations and the public through a variety of means - written, oral, and electronic. Conduct practice-related research and analysis. Develop/coordinate practice materials and position papers.
  • Represent social workers in a variety of contexts. Provide field-specific and technical consultation and issue-related expertise to chapters and the Membership Center. Participate with other Association activities as needed. Interpret legislative and regulatory issues in the field and provide NASW's perspective on these efforts to other professional and policy-making communities.
  • Engage in professional outreach and response. Incorporate the acquired information into agenda setting and product design.
  • Provide special support for legislative and regulatory activities as requested.
  • Provide staff support for relevant Board appointed committees in accordance with strategic planning parameters; harness the practice and expertise of the membership.
  • Develop proposals for program grants and contracts that enhance program directions.
  • Develop practice standards and policy statements as needed and collaborate with other relevant offices to implement these standards. Assist in the development and implementation of credentials in specific fields of practice.
  • Participate in major coalitions and stakeholder groups to advance sound social policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

III. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Internal: Interact with supervisor, NASW staff, chapter staff, appointed leadership and members to exchange information and for job execution.
  • External: Interact with relevant federal and state government administrations and the social work community to advise on issues as the resident expert and to maintain appropriate professional contacts. Also may interact with government officials and others to exchange information and educate about NASW policies and practice issues.

IV. MINIMUM WORK REQUIREMENTS:

  • Skills: Requires strong clinical expertise; analytical ability; and ability to conduct studies and to work effectively with members and volunteers. Must have skills in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Must have strong public speaking skills as well as research and assessment skills and the ability to summarize information into clear, organized, factually sound, persuasive and objective reports.
  • Knowledge: Master's degree in Social Work required from an accredited school of social work. Prefer exposure to electronic bulletin boards, local area networks, word-processing, spreadsheet software and databases.
  • Experience: Requires five years of prior professional social work practice experience related to the position's specified practice area, in addition to the education requirement. A social work license is required.
