The Department of Cell Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Senior Scientist to work in Dr. Elias Spiliotis's laboratory (spiliotislab.org). Senior Scientists are expected to have sufficient experience and background to organize small research groups. Senior Scientists are expected to perform assigned tasks on their own initiative with minimal direction.

Job Duties

• Organize and mentor small research groups that work on projects within the scope of the research interests and grant funding of the PI (neuronal morphogenesis, cancer cell migration and invasion, intracellular membrane traffic)

• Design and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data in consultation with the PI

• Write grant applications and manuscripts in collaboration with the PI

• Train lab personnel in equipment operation and research techniques; provide assistance, feedback and advice on microscopy image acquisition and analysis

• Develop and troubleshoot imaging-based protocols; work with microscopy field service engineers to optimize imaging capabilities and analyses, and to troubleshoot technical challenges

• Present their research at local, national and international meetings; mentor lab personnel under their guidance in presentation of research projects

• Participate in shared lab duties and activities including weekly lab meetings and/or journal clubs

• May oversee and manage budgets that support the research of research group under their supervision

• In addition to the above duties, other duties might be assigned

Minimum Requirement

Education: PhD degree

Preferred Skills

Education: PhD degree in a science related field

Experience: Five years of research experience as a post-doctoral fellow and/or research scientist following the completion of PhD

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring finer finger manipulation.
