Summary Description
Operates blasting equipment to remove rust, scale, paint, and other foreign materials from the interior and/or exterior of railcars or equipment. Applies stencils/decals to rail or tank cars as needed. The employee strives for a high level of quality and works with a limited amount of supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Learn the basic flow and logistics of the railroad industry and repair business
- Follow all safety rules, keep work area clean, and comply with all OSHA and Cathcart Environmental, Health and Safety Policies
- Comply with the companys Quality Program by following all in-house quality processes and procedures and required AAR and FRA rules and regulations as well as any client-specific procedures
- Follow written and verbal directions and have basic math, reading, and writing skills, while effectively working in a team environment.
- Thorough understanding of railcar, components, and/or shop work order.
- Blow off railcars and inspect car condition to confirm they are clean and dry before and after the blasting process.
- Cover car parts with protective covering materials (burlap, paper, cloth) to prevent blast media from damaging sensitive railcar components.
- Operate blasting equipment to remove scale, paint and other foreign substances from inside and/or outside of railcars and other materials to prime, paint and stencil the interior and/or exterior surfaces of railcars or equipment.
- Surface preparation of non-finished railcars and components using various blast media methods.
- Clean railcar and perform general inspection of railcar for readiness for finishing application.
- Final preparation of the railcar for finishing, including caulking, taping off, and other tasks.
- Change various hose sizes and nozzle when necessary.
- Clean, maintain, and properly store equipment. Dismantle, assemble and adjust blasting equipment, as necessary, to ensure equipment operates per manufactures specification.
- Make adjustments to equipment as is necessary to perform efficient and proper blasting, including but not limited to, grit recovery systems.
- Move and position scaffolding as necessary.
- Assist painters.
- Apply stencils/decals.
- Perform blast profile gaging by use of profile tape and dial indicator.
- Set up and operate various hand and power tools such as, but not limited to, blasting equipment, grinders, wire, and sanding discs, etc.
- Perform any other duties as assigned such as special projects
Qualifications
- High-school diploma or general education degree (GED), preferred not required
- Participate and successfully complete the Cathcart Rail training program with an 80% or higher score
- Documented training to set up and operate or drive equipment such as, but not limited to forklift, man lift, crane, backhoe, skid loader, hoist, or hydraulic boom
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
- Must be able to fully pass the fitness-for-duty examination, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings
