The Software Product Owner is responsible for planning and ensuring the success of the development of commercial software products. They will determine the roadmap for the products under management as well as prioritize backlog requests. They are comfortable working both with a broad definition of Customers (end users, product management, and business development teams) and the Software Team and can effectively communicate both ways. In addition to normal product ownership activities, the Software Product Owner may also perform several functions at once depending on the needs of the team(s), such as customer relationship building, defining the product vision/roadmap, crafting user stories, completing acceptance testing, and participating in software development process meetings.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads discovery sessions, survey work, user testing, and competitive research with customers to understand the problem and help the development team understand the requirements.
  • Manages prioritizing at both the project level and within projects to ensure a minimum viable product can be delivered first.
  • Works with the Customer and Development Team to define an appropriate scope and schedule for projects, with a strong preference toward agile approaches.
  • Supports the development team by resolving questions and issues quickly, managing expectations, and assisting/owning communication with stakeholders.
  • Keeps communication channels open and ensures tight feedback loops between the Customer and Development Team.
  • Uses a broad array of analytical tools and data to assess feature effectivity and success. Analytics should be rooted in driving our strategy and evaluating the effectiveness of features.
  • Identifies and analyzes market trends and competitive strategy to assess and evaluate our products’ features.
  • Engages sales and business leaders to ensure collaboration and broader execution of commercial software strategies is successful.
  • Mentors and develops team members.
  • Assists with organizational planning, recruiting & hiring, budgets, presentations to management & customers, co-op program administration, and other management functions.

Flexible Work Schedule – Remote Work Option and Core Hours:
This role has the flexibility of a remote work option up to three days a week and a core hour schedule dependent on your department and leadership approval. You can choose to flex your start and stop times given you are working during the core hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm. Our teams work together to ensure our chosen work schedules enable our creativity and productivity as we serve the needs of our customers.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Bachelors Degree in Information Technology or Software Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • At least four (4) years related work experience.
  • Solid understanding of software development life cycle models as well as knowledge of both agile and traditional project management principles and practices and the ability to blend them together in the right proportions to fit a project and business environment.
  • Practical experience seeing both large and small software projects to completion.
  • Sufficient level of technical background to be able to accurately and objectively evaluate complex project risks and issues.
  • Experience creating compelling presentations for customers and management (e.g. via PowerPoint or Keynote).

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Information Technology or Software Engineering from an accredited college or university.
