DEFINITION: Under the direction of the Director of Exceptional Education, the Adaptive PE Teacher provides services to students with disabilities so that they may access and benefit from their program of education, future career training or experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Individual with Disabilities in Education Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.

TASKS: The Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher is an educationally trained professional who is able to assess individual students and develop, adapt, and implement specialized physical education programs in the motor domain.
Designing the adaptive physical education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy and goals of the district.
Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature and exchanging ideas with district staff (collaboration with PE Teachers and Physical Therapist regularly).
Working in coordination with other Special Ed and General Ed teachers and ancillary personnel (Physical Therapist) in planning and developing the program.
Identifying strengths and weaknesses of students with disabilities served in the program developing goals.
Preparing, implementing and evaluating an Individual Educational Plan for each student based on individually assessed needs and in accordance with district procedures.
Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to areas of instruction.
Planning, implementing and evaluating projects and programs designed to serve students in the program as assigned (i.e., Special Olympics, Athletics etc.)
Planning and providing regularly scheduled Special Olympics, and athletic training programs as assigned.
Preparing lesson plans for each student.
Providing appropriate schedules for special education students involving school personnel as required.
Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of students.
Providing specialized instructional techniques through individual or group sessions designed to meet the educational needs of students.
Participating on evaluation teams for students as appropriate.
Planning and implementing a program to assemble, adjust and maintain equipment used in the program.
Supervising paraprofessionals as assigned.
Developing and conducting an in-service program to inform classroom teachers of the goals and objectives of adaptive PE and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
Assisting in providing information to community groups and parents concerning adaptive PE programs as requested (includes special projects and programs such as Special Olympics, athletics, etc.)
Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his/her permanent folder.
Furnishing the school principal and exceptional education director with current special education student schedules.
Completing progress reports on each student in the program.
Referring those students who require further evaluation or re-evaluation follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
Other responsibilities as directed by his/her immediate supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge and understanding State and Federal laws, rules, regulations and activities standards.
Knowledge and/or experience with Americans with Disability Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), surrounding Tucson area employment opportunities, and various state regulations related to students and adults with disabilities.
Knowledge of developmental levels of school age children.
Knowledge of District and Department policies and procedures.
Knowledge of various teaching techniques and methods.
Skill in applying common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Skill in reading and interpreting documents such as rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.
Skill in writing routine reports and correspondence.
Skill in effective written and oral communication.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Skill in basic math computations.
Ability to work effectively and appropriately with students, parents and other educational professionals regarding student concerns and barriers to success.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an out/indoor environment. Work requires frequent movement and physical exertion, repetitive motion, vision to monitor, and may require some lifting.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education or related field.
Experience working with student with moderate to significant disabilities.
Valid Arizona Standard Professional PreK-12 Physical Education
Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Master's Degree in Education or related field to include Special education.
Coursework in adaptive PE (12 Credit hours)

Any equivalent combination of training, education or experience that meets the minimum qualifications and State certification requirements will be accepted.
