Manage a very large and highly complex department with an extensive teaching program and an active research faculty. Supervise and develop eight non-academic staff in the areas of finance, personnel, curriculum, enrollment, and facilities operations. Interpret and implement financial, human resource, and other administrative policies. Coordinate administration of teaching resource allocation, budget process, teaching replacement and visitor funding, and the teaching assistant budget. Monitor, oversee and forecast balances for appropriated, gift, endowment, and grant accounts.
The manager must coordinate and manage the interrelationships and activities of these areas and the cross-functional impacts of program and resource decisions. Manage or support long range planning projects for the chair and faculty with respect to resources, operations, and policy development. Institute sound administrative procedures to ensure consistency, fairness, and compliance in operations. This position is the main contact for other sectors of the university with respect to administrative matters and is responsible for effectively communicating and collaborating with college and university offices to advocate for the department and fulfill the department and university missions.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
Master’s degree plus 5-7 years managerial, supervisory, and financial experience or equivalent combination. Requires strong supervisory, managerial, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills and experience; as well as in-depth background in finance (appropriated, grants, contracts, endowments) and good understanding of technology (e.g., database, CU administrative & financial systems). The Department Manager is a generalist, and as such, this position requires competencies across several functional areas (e.g., academic administration, facilities finance, human resources, information technology, student services). An in-depth understanding and appreciation of academic department business activities is important. A proven ability to manage simultaneously multiple areas, events and deadlines, evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment are a must.
Preferred Qualifications: Several years of managerial experience in an academic department preferred.
