We develop and implement technical solutions that ensure our facilities run safely, efficiently, and reliably. This role is responsible for building the health and safety strategy for our Wood Products business. The incumbent leads a team of corporate health and safety professionals in developing standards, programs, and processes that enable our facilities to execute the safety strategy with excellence. The team provides direction and oversight to our manufacturing sites and distribution centers, helping them build and implement action plans that target health and safety risks and eliminate serious injuries. We also manage and deliver company health and safety processes – including our safety vision, incident management system, safety audit, and other health and safety programs. Diligent execution of these systems ensures continuous improvement and consistent achievement of company, business and site health and safety goals and objectives. Ideal candidates will be in the greater Seattle area but remote candidates will also be considered.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead development of the Wood Products health and safety strategy, goals and metrics and communicate expectations to all levels of the organization. Serve as vital member of the Wood Products leadership team.
- Provide strategic thought-leadership to Wood Products business leaders to ensure our safety strategy meets the business requirements for all manufacturing and distribution sites and aligns to our company mission and vision.
- Lead safety program and process reviews for the Wood Products business, product lines, and operations. Support site and business leaders to ensure mitigations plans are effectively executed.
- Track and regularly report progress to ensure consistent execution and continuous improvement at the manufacturing and distribution site level.
- Identify performance-improvement opportunities and sites that need additional health and safety focus and support. Identify leaders and sponsors to facilitate interventions at health and safety ‘focus sites’.
- Serve as valued member of the company’s Corporate Affairs leadership team. Establish company health and safety goals and metrics; track and report progress throughout the year.
- Lead and own company health and safety toolkit processes including the safety audit, standards and policies, incident management system, incident investigation process, and training program.
- Lead a team of corporate health and safety professionals who provide technical health and safety support, guidance, and direction to 36 Wood Products manufacturing operations and 19 distribution centers.
- Assign and delegate ownership of company and business health and safety-related projects and task teams.
- Guide and mentor the team in providing world-class professional and technical health and safety support and direction to our facilities, including:
- Coach and develop the competency of site safety resources and other leaders
- Provide guidance in developing, executing, and tracking progress of site risk-based safety plans
- Support and, when appropriate, lead serious incident investigations to ensure identification, sharing and application of key learning across the system to prevent recurrence
- Lead and conduct facility safety audits and inspections to identify and correct deficiencies not to standard with company and regulatory requirements
- Facilitate training of leaders in company and business health and safety standards, processes, and expectations
- Work diligently with leadership, Human Resources and company recruiting professionals to identify and staff health and safety resource vacancies with top-quality professionals
- Regularly solicit feedback on team member performance from key site and business customers. Manage performance through proactive and caring coaching, mentoring and professional development opportunities to ensure continuous improvement of team competency and effectiveness.
Bachelor’s degree in health and safety, industrial hygiene, or scientific discipline (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, math). Graduate degree preferred
Certified in professional safety and/or industrial hygiene (CSP, CIH, ROH, CMSP, CRSP, etc.)
15+ years of experience in health and safety in a manufacturing environment
5+ years’ experience in formal and/or informal health and safety leadership role
Exceptional people leadership skills with the ability to effectively lead teams through complex changes while also developing people, driving, delivering, and inspiring team results
Exceptional project management skills including providing leadership to effectively manage and execute highly complex transformational initiatives; deep experience with project management methodologies and tools
Ability to understand highly complex and ambiguous health and safety related issues, own decisions and effectively implement solutions that have company-wide impacts
Demonstrated ability to drive strategic initiatives while effectively collaborating and team building across functions to achieve results
Exceptional advisory, influencing and facilitating skills in working with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively negotiate with other teams to create mutually beneficial solutions
Comfortable and confident in working with and presenting to leaders and team members at all levels
Exceptional communication, interpersonal, advisory, and influencing skills
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to all levels of leaders and stakeholders
Committed to growing the technical and health/safety skills and discover new and better ways to deliver solutions
Strong ability to proactively mentor and develop others in growing technical and professional abilities
Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $135,500 - $203,300 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 25% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.
Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours, along with WA Paid Family & Medical Leave and paid parental leave for all full-time employees.
