The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking a temporary State Fair Administrator 1 to work at the Great New York State Fair. The State Fair Administrator 1 will work within the Ag Department as the Manager of the Art and Home Center. This position is expected to run from May 2023 through October 2023.

Division of the State Fair:
The New York State Fair and Fairgrounds are used to promote and highlight New York State and its agriculture, commerce, arts, and sciences to residents of the State of New York. As part of this mission, the New York State Fair provides an educational forum for agriculture and commerce; enhances the image of New York’s agriculture and commerce; provides affordable, quality entertainment and educational opportunities for the people of New York; contributes to the efforts of the State, industry, associations and private businesses in the promotion and marketing of agriculture and agri-business; and creatively provides opportunities for economic growth by producing revenues and providing jobs.

The annual State Fair, held for 13 days ending on Labor Day, preserves and enhances the agricultural legacy of the State of New York and promotes current and future agricultural awareness. The State Fair hosts statewide competitions in the breeding and showing of horses and livestock and the production of quality wine, vegetables, fruit, honey, maple syrup, flowers, forage, and grain. Likewise, the Fair also hosts competitions for the youth of New York State that include horses, livestock, horticulture, robotics, dogs, sports, talent, and general economics.

The Fair's priority is attracting people to this unique tourism asset, which is the nation's first and oldest State Fair, attracting over 1.2 million people each year and bringing 180 events year-round.

Standard Duties:
The State Fair Administrator 1 will work within the Ag Department as the Manager of the Art and Home Center. They will manage and coordinate events, exhibits, competitions, and the use and rental of facilities, concessions, or supplement services on the State Fairgrounds to maximize the facilities’ use and profitability. They plan, schedule, execute, and process contracts, billing, and events logistics.

Appointment Process and Minimum Qualifications:
This State Fair Administrator 1 is expected to run from May 2023 through October 2023 and is paid an hourly rate based on experience. An appointment may be made to a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. This position is not tenure-bearing.

Minimum Qualifications and Pay Rates:

State Fair Administrator Trainee 1, NS (equated to G-13); $22.28/hour: bachelor’s degree or higher

State Fair Administrator Trainee 2, NS (equated to G-14); $23.56/hour: bachelor’s degree AND 1 year of experience working with conventions; trade shows; major fairs; expositions; convention centers; entertainment facilities; sports arenas and/or performing arts venues in the areas of fair management, equine/livestock exhibitions, event/ logistics planning, event promotions, oversight of facility use or concessions

State Fair Administrator 1, NS (equated to G-18); $29.34/hour: bachelor’s degree AND 2 years of experience working with conventions; trade shows; major fairs; expositions; convention centers; entertainment facilities; sports arenas and/or performing arts venues in the areas of fair management, equine/livestock exhibitions, event/ logistics planning, event promotions, oversight of facility use or concessions management.
