The Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science is a community of people committed to tackling some of the world's biggest challenges. The Cornell Statistical Consulting Unit (CSCU) is a research support unit whose mission is to support Cornell faculty, staff, and students with study design, data analysis, and the use of statistics in their research. CSCU is part of the department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) within Cornell Bowers CIS, but works with faculty, staff, and students from the College of Agriculture and Life Science, the College of Industrial and Labor Relations, the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, the SC Johnson College of Business, the College of Human Ecology, the Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Cornell Law School, and several departments from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.


The CSCU is a fast-paced office which has logged more than 3000 client contacts annually over the past few years, and this number is continuously increasing. CSCU also offers a growing number of workshops, guest lectures and short courses on statistical methods and programming and, additionally, provides statistical contract services (i.e., full-service statistical analyses) for Cornell affiliated clients.


What You Will Do


The Statistical Consultant position provides applied statistical support to a wide variety of university departments through the Cornell Statistical Consulting Unit (CSCU). Responsibilities include providing substantive statistical consulting and research support for faculty, research staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students, under the supervision of senior consultants. Clients come from a wide range of fields of research including but not limited to epidemiology, economics, psychology, sociology, nutrition, microbiology and genetics, linguistics, agricultural and plant sciences, engineering, and veterinary medicine. The position will also involve providing statistical contract services to Cornell affiliated clients, teaching workshops and guest lectures on statistical topics, and assisting with administrative duties as needed.

What We Need


  • Master’s degree in statistics or related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a research environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of theoretical statistics, as well as experience in their application.
  • Ability to independently learn new statistical and computational methods.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Ability to work and collaborate effectively with a large and diverse clientele.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in an accessible way.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience using various statistical packages such as R, SAS, Stata, Python, SPSS, and JMP.
  • Commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The position will typically allow for the flexibility to work remotely 2 days per week at a location of employee’s choosing within the United States. This hybrid work arrangement will be possible only after an approximately 3-month onboarding period of fully in-person work. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
