Job Summary

Seasonal Backpacking Guides lead 2-5 day backpacking trips for middle school and high school age students. These trips focus on educating, supporting, and empowering youth as they develop their own relationship with the outdoors. We are looking for people who are passionate about the outdoors, are comfortable leading and guiding youth, and who are able to learn, perform, and teach the skills needed for multi-day backpacking. Previous outdoor experience is required.
This job will have a "flex-time" schedule, with guides able to choose their own trips based on their availability and the need for personnel. Guides will be paid for hours and trips worked. Reports to the Program Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Teach middle school and high school age students backpacking skills by demonstrating, coaching, and giving them the opportunity to use the skills on their own.
  • Support students using trauma informed principles as they navigate physical, mental, and emotional challenges associated with outdoor adventure.
  • Adjust trip expectations, including route, schedule, and objectives, to manage risk and best fit the needs of the group.
  • Ensure group adherence to Leave No Trace, Sahale Outdoors protocols, and permit specifications.
  • Perform first aid assistance, behavioral crisis management, and other support of individual health as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Holding or working towards four year degree in relevant field of study (includes: science, humanities, medical, social, and environmental degrees), OR
  • High school education with at least one year of outdoor guiding experience.
  • Familiarity with hiking or backpacking.
  • Ability to be patient and encouraging with youth through adverse circumstances, with an understanding of trauma informed principles.
  • Ability to maintain positive outlook and good decision-making in adverse circumstances including inclement weather, personal challenges, and unmet expectations.
  • Awareness of personal biases, and ability to work with diverse groups of people to create an environment of respect, support, and collaboration.
  • Understanding of the value of incorporating Indigenous history and knowledge into outdoor education and recreation.
  • Wilderness First Responder or ability to obtain before season.
  • Ability to complete Youth Mental Health First Aid training before season.
  • Ability to attend training dates June 28-July 1.
  • Ability to work at least one week-long trip during the summer season.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
