Position Description


The Technical Communications Specialist (TxDOT Title: Information Specialist V) is responsible for planning, creating, and maintaining communications and communications processes to support TXDOT ITD Applications. This position will focus on drafting communications for internal and external customers of Applications for product releases and system updates and create communication plans according to ITD processes for end-user training needs and organizational change. The Technical Communications Specialist will also assist Applications leadership with creating polished presentations for executive audiences, document ITD governance meetings, and support ITD through branding, messaging, and general communications tasks.

Essential Duties:

  • Draft communications in support of Application product releases, updates, and upgrades
  • Oversee communications from Applications to other ITD and TxDOT business areas
  • Plan, develop, deliver, and maintain operational guidance and process documentation
  • Translate complex technical concepts into accessible reporting, communications products, and documentation for data visualizations and presentations
  • Support content development for metadata tagging for data domains
  • Develop multimedia training content as needed following ITD enterprise communications process
  • Create brief video tutorials, help systems and online user guides
  • Support routine, recurring communications such as monthly and quarterly reports
  • Write in explanatory and procedural styles for multiple audiences
  • Consult with stakeholders to assist in implementing updates to software documentation

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in n Communications, Public Relations, Business or related disciplines. Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 5 years writing, editing, journalism or communications related activities. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.



Competencies:

  • Proven experience in technical writing with a focus on data and analysis a plus
  • Skilled in other written communication disciplines, including creative and persuasive writing
  • Excellent planning skills
  • Background in social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube
  • Knowledge of software documentation tools and roadmap tools such as Roadmunk
  • Excellent verbal communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Skilled at prioritization and multitasking

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
