The Professional Writing Tutor (part-time) works with students to help develop their writing skills and strategies. We are seeking to fill two (2) vacancies. One of the positions will be located on the Fort Steilacoom campus and the other at the Puyallup campus. This position requires regular and consistent attendance.

Pierce College Fort Steilacoom - Located on a beautiful 140-acre site adjacent to a 340-acre community, recreational park, and Waughop Lake.

Pierce College Puyallup – Located on a luscious site with 125-acres of wooded land with beautiful hideaways.

Pierce College at JBLM – Located at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord military sites, serving many of our military and active duty families that are serving our country.

Essential Functions

Each of the following functions are undertaken with a commitment to actively supporting, engaging in, and working to advance Pierce College's goals for equity and inclusion in order to provide access and support for our diverse community of learners.

Tutoring:

  • Tutoring students one-on-one or in small groups in academic writing.
Recordkee p ing:
  • Administrative recording of appointment reports and scheduling.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Associate degree.
Required Experience:
  • Experience with academic writing (within the last 5 years).
  • Familiarity with referencing styles such as American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and positively with individuals of diverse cultural and socioeconomic background and educationally diverse populations.
  • Ability to see the value of cultural, ethnic, gender, and other individual differences in people.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and professionalism working with those who are non-native English speaking populations.
  • Ability to notice, interpret, and anticipate others' concerns and feelings, and to communicate this awareness empathetically to others.
S p ecial Requirements:

Terms of Employment:
This is a part-time hourly position expected to work in support of students during college quarters. Positions are hourly and will not exceed 19 hours of work per week. The incumbent must be flexible and willing to work during campus school hours. This position is not eligible for retirement or healthcare benefits. This position will work inside in a classroom environment at one or more of the Pierce College District campus and/or offsite locations.

Please Note

If you have held a part-time hourly, or temporary position, after July 1, 2022 within Pierce College, you will not qualify for the position and therefore will not be considered, per WAC 357-04-045

The provisions of WAC 357-04-045 requires:
  • The employee is employed twelve consecutive months or less;
  • The employee is employed for one thousand fifty hours (1050) or less in that same twelve consecutive month period which begins from the original date of hire or July 1, 2022, whichever is later; and
  • The employee is limited to one appointment only with the same higher education employer that meets the criteria in (a) and (b) of this subsection.
Please note new provisions for part - time hourly employment:
The provisions of WAC 357-04-045 requires:
(a) The employee is employed twelve consecutive months or less;
(b) The employee is employed for one thousand fifty hours (1050) or less in that same twelve consecutive month period which begins from the original date of hire or July 1, 2022, whichever is later; and
(c) The employee is limited to one appointment only with the same higher education employer that meets the criteria in (a) and (b) of this subsection.

Physical Work Environment:
This position works indoors in an office environment.
