Stipend: $680/week (paid on a bi-weekly basis) + $270/week housing allowance
Term: 24 weeks
Reports To: USDA Forest Service Cibola National Forest
Location: Albuquerque, NM
Status: 900-hour AmeriCorps Service Term
Benefits: AmeriCorps Education Award $3,247.50 after successful completion of term

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.
Program Overview:
The Trails Management program within the Cibola National Forest provides outdoor access to the public in the form of hiking, equestrian and bike trails and fosters community opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation. Having sustainable trails is crucial to ultimately prevent unnecessary natural resource degradation. The individuals will be trained in trails management, inspecting, collection of information for condition surveys, as well as the ability to perform basic trail management and construction. Individuals will be assisting with oversite of various trail projects within the Zuni’s, Lobo Canyon (Mt. Taylor) and a variety of projects on the Sandia Mountain Range.
Essential roles and responsibilities include:
1.) Trail Fundamentals and Construction
- Understanding of basic trail building tools, their use, and methodology of applying treatments to the ground
- Basic Tool Functionality
- PPE Requirements
- Water Control Structures
- Advanced trail structures such as retaining walls and bermed turns
2.) Trail Inspection, Surveys and Project Preparation
- Understanding of basic trail project management and adherence to USFS specs
- Inspections and Surveys: ensuring trails are constructed/ repaired to spec, identifying concerns, conducting surveys on trail segments
- Project Site Prep: lagging trail alignments, identifying hazard and no-go situations
- Implementation Prep: ensuring PPE/gear is collected for interns and potential partners
3.) Partnerships and Volunteerism
- Working with various agency partners
- Assisting with the coordination of logistics for partners
- Ensuring appropriate level of PPE and training is acquired before moving forward
- Ability to speak to site specific trail standards

- Clean driving record
- Ability to be competently trained to perform the work
- Ability to be self sufficient
Training Provided:
- Field training
- Various written, classroom and visual trainings
Potential Human & Environmental Risk:
- Slips, trips, and falls
- Exposure from the use of hand tools
- Front country/back country trail exposure
- Working in remote locations, may have overnights near project sites or USFS bunkhouses

Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship
- Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
- Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
- A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
- A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
- Driver's License
- Per grant funding guidelines applicants must be 18-30 years of age, up to 35 if a veteran
