Job Description
The Accounting Assistant position of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University (BBI) is located within the College of Law. BBI conducts multiple grant-funded research projects simultaneously, across the country and globally in efforts to advance the civic, economic, and social participation of people with disabilities.

The Accounting Assistant is responsible for mission-critical support for BBI Senior Leadership, the operations of multiple projects and programs, accounting and administrative functions, and clerical support for the department. Responsibilities include performing complex and comprehensive financial, project-related and administrative tasks as well as routine activities. In addition to regular administrative and financial work with daily, weekly and monthly deadlines, this position works also works on new and changing special projects as needed.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • General accounting/budgeting experience necessary.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • At least three years’ experience in an academic setting preferred. Must be proficient in the use of Oracle generated financial reports and queries, Adobe Acrobat and MS Office software applications, especially Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail is essential.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to prioritize duties to deal with multiple demands in order to successfully meet deadlines.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgment.
  • Must possess the initiative and ability to work independently with a minimum of direction; and must also possess good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work well as a team member.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Appellate Brief Legal Training (ABLT) Project Director in scheduling & hiring activities, and in downloading and processing confidential sponsor files received on a daily basis.
  • Prepare various documents, such as invoices, travel vouchers, expense reimbursements, credit card reconciliations, purchase order requests, etc., substantiating business transactions as they are processed. Verify subsequent posting of all transactions taking necessary steps to correct any errors and follow up on outstanding items.
  • Using SU system financial reports, queries and files maintained, perform reconciliations on a regular basis to prepare updated vendor & subcontractor summaries, projects’ budget status reports, and other reports maintained at BBI and as required by other departments at SU
  • Collaborate with the Disability Rights Bar Association team (a program managed by
    BBI) preparing financial reports, in maintaining member files, organizing their annual meeting, and invoicing all members on an annual basis.
  • Assist and participate in the coordination and scheduling of various project tasks and virtual meetings with BBI staff, consultants, and contractors in Syracuse, the Southeast region, the DC area, DC and elsewhere nationally and internationally.
  • Other duties as assigned.
