About the Community of Writers

The Community of Writers is a small nonprofit that hosts two world-class week-long writing workshops in the Sierras, and produces several large events online. For 53 years we have held those workshops in the off-season ski area in Olympic Valley. The year-round office is in Nevada City, with conference weeks in the Tahoe Area.

Role Summary: Alumni Relations & Communications Assistant

The Community of Writers is seeking an energetic and committed individual to work closely with the Executive Director and Production/Development Director as Alumni Relations & Communications Assistant. The individual must be organized, positive, flexible, enjoy writing, event-planning, and should be familiar with social media. Local candidates preferred, but remote workers will also be considered. (See location, below.)

The position is a year-round, part-time position with the possibility of additional hours as needed with a 2-year employment contract with continuation per mutual agreement. There may be some evening and weekend work required.

The employee will be provided a mac computer containing all necessary applications

Hours

30 hours per week, with more hours as needed. In addition, during the weeks at the workshops, hours would be full-time. Position may become full-time depending on the ways in which the role and the work evolves.

Salary

$21-23/hr. Depending on experience.

Location

If local, employee is expected to work in the Nevada City, California office 30-50% of the time, with the balance, if preferred, to be worked remotely. Any candidate would also need to commit to spending 14-18 (non- consecutive) days in Olympic Valley, CA, each summer for our Summer Workshops. Lodging and dinners will be provided during this time, and travel expenses reimbursed

Benefits

Blue Shield Health insurance, 19 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year for the first two years (inclusive of sick days, federal holidays, and vacations) up to a maximum of 24 days. Additional PTO accrual is commensurate with additional years of service.

Requisites

  • Bachelors Degree

Skills

  • Experience with writing and/or publicity
  • Organized and a self-starter
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic graphic design skills a plus
  • Excels at detail-oriented work and event-planning.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Donations

  • Process donations and handle donor communications, and reporting

· PR for Fundraising campaigns

  • Assist with publicity for fundraising campaigns.

· Alumni Services

  • Update alumni publishing news on CW website.
  • Help plan & produce alumni events.
  • Track successes of workshop alums.

· Events/Meetings/Workshops

  • Take part in the planning and producing live and web-based events.

· Summer Workshops (two week-long workshops)

  • Help with set-up and clean up.
  • Assist with logistics including transportation and lodging
  • Organize on-site bookshop (including merchandise orders)
  • Publicity for on-site events
  • Event planning and more including Benefit Poetry Reading.
  • Other tasks as needed

· Public Relations Assistant

Assist with public relations and advertising as needed. Including press releases, print and web ads, social media, marketing collateral and more.

· Board of Directors

  • Help ED plan board meetings, functions and requisite record-keeping.

· Other

  • Support Writers Annex online events
  • Help plan Fundraising and Reunion events
  • Assist in any other activities, as needed.
