The Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte supports the academic, personal, and interpersonal development of UNC Charlotte students by providing short-term individual and group counseling, psychological assessment, consultation for faculty, staff, parents, and students, and educational programs to the campus community.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director for Training is the primary administrator responsible for the oversight, creation, and implementation of CAPS’ training programs for the center’s psychology doctoral interns, doctoral-level and master’s level practicum students, and clinical graduate assistants. The position is also responsible for supervision of the Assistant Director for Training and administrative supervision of additional designated permanent staff. Performs administrative duties as assigned. This position serves as chair of the center’s training committee and provides direct clinical services, consultation and outreach as is consistent with other staff psychologists.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of CAPS, this position is the primary administrator responsible for the oversight and leadership of the center’s training programs including doctoral interns, doctoral-level and master’s-level practicum students, and clinical graduate assistants. This position also provides direct clinical services as is consistent with other staff psychologists as well as outreach services, supervision, research and evaluation, and service to the University community.

Duties specific to role as Associate Director of Training:
- Provides oversight and leadership for the center’s training programs including doctoral interns, doctoral-level and master’s-level practicum students, and clinical graduate assistants.
- Serves as chair of the Training Committee.
- Develops and implements strategic goals for the holistic CAPS’ training program
- Establishes and maintains relationships with campus academic departments that represent the center’s trainees, including Health Psychology program, School of Social Work, and Department of Counselor Education.
- Serves as the center’s primary representative to national training accreditation bodies.
- Conducts yearly review of center training data, including feedback from trainees.
- Maintains and develops policy and procedures for training programs. Serves as the primary consultant to CAPS staff and trainees on training issues.
- Serves as a member of the CAPS leadership team
Minimum Education/Experience
- Terminal degree in counseling or clinical psychology or social work.
- Completion of an APA-accredited doctoral internship or completion of all necessary hours for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- At least four years of Counseling Center experience, with evidence of increasing amounts of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
- Experience with administering or assisting with administration of a training program including practicum training programs, psychology doctoral internship programs, and/or post-doctoral fellowships from a multidisciplinary lens. Knowledge of APA standards regarding accreditation of training programs.
- Experience providing supervision to student staff.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Must achieve licensure as a Psychologist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of North Carolina within six months of hire and maintain this licensure.
