Job Description


The Battery Engineer will work in the Product Development team to evaluate new materials for use in 24M’s semisolid lithium ion batteries and lead materials testing and reporting, working with suppliers to develop new materials. Primary responsibilities of this position include (1) leading materials evaluation and development, (2) analyzing and reporting results both internally and globally, (3) providing guidance to associate engineers and technicians, (4) materials test method development, (5) setting specifications for battery materials.


Qualifications
  • Demonstrated capability of designing experiments to enable clear results that drive decisions.
  • Experience in and understanding of lithium ion chemistry and battery components.
  • Experience in post-test lithium ion battery analysis to identify cell/material failure mode.
  • Ability to grasp technical concepts and communicate in a data driven manner.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction, and also as part of team.
  • Proven ability to complete projects on time.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook email applications.
  • Good attention to detail.

Required Experience:

  • MS/Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemical Engineering, or equivalent
  • 1 or more post-degree years of commercial/industrial battery R&D experience


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute materials evaluation plans (leading role).
  • Analyze and report test results and cell data.
  • Conduct work to understand and document failure modes of batteries and materials.
  • Develop new test methods and equipment.
  • Conduct studies to understand performance and processability of new materials.
  • Conduct experiments including limit testing to set specifications for battery materials.
  • Support material quality investigations.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.

Additional Information


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provide guidance to associate battery engineers in standard method development, materials testing, failure analysis, data analysis, and writing standard operating procedures.
  • Provide guidance to process team on how to work with materials.
  • Work closely with quality technicians guiding their work and assisting them in developing a greater understanding of what they are doing and why they are doing it.

Physical and Environmental Standards:

  • Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point)
  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
  • Capable of meeting OSHA standards for manual lifting guidelines: < 50lbs
  • Travel may be required in support of material supplier quality audits and partner support.
