The Community Support Assistant will support one to four people living in a suburban or rural community with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The Community Support Assistant is responsible for supporting persons with I/DD by facilitating and promoting independence, self-advocacy, and decision making. The Community Support Assistant will support a person’s life choices and facilitate opportunities to build relationships. A key component of this position is to promote independence and personal growth. This position can be both part-time and full-time. Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, such as a GED.
  • Have a valid Maryland Driver’s License with 2 or fewer points.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.

Essential Functions

  • Provide support with daily living activities at home and in the community, such as meal preparation, personal care, and maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.
  • Provide services outlined in the Person-Centered Plan each person we support, ensuring goals are developed, implemented and progress benchmarks are being met.
  • Administer medication as a trained Certified Medication Technician through the Maryland Board of Nursing and under the direction of an agency Delegating Nurse.
  • Monitor and report any concerns regarding an individual’s living conditions; ensure Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and OHCQ regulations are met for all home environments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 75 pounds in supporting people with activities of daily living. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to drive is a requirement of the position.

While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with the community stakeholders including elected and appointed officials, staff, people supported, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
