Job Description
Statement of Duties
Position performs skilled electrical work on city facilities, requiring the use of judgment to plan and perform installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical circuits, wiring systems, fixtures, appliances, and other equipment in accordance with regulatory codes.
Supervision
Employee works under the general supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. Any questionable cases are referred to the supervisor for clarification or interpretation. Work is reviewed only to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress, and to insure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.
Job Environment
Position responsibilities require the use of judgment and initiative to interpret the numerous standardized practices, procedures, codes, or general instructions governing the work. Employee is expected to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline for a given situation.
Errors can result in personal injury/loss, delay or loss of service, monetary loss, injury to other employees or public, damage to buildings or equipment, or legal repercussions.
The position seldom has contact with the public or City employees, in person or on the phone, for responding to inquiries and complaints and providing information and assistance. Contact usually occurs in person, via radio, or on the phone.
Position Functions

Essential Functions
Installs, repairs, and maintains electrical circuits, wiring systems, fixtures, appliances, equipment, motors, control panels, and other electrical devices.- Plans layout for wiring of new buildings and old buildings in need for wiring.
- Follows approved-Engineering Department plans for the installation of rough and finish electrical wiring.
- Consults with contractors and City Engineer regarding new circuits and modifications of old circuits.
- Troubleshoots and repairs faulty electrical oil burner wiring, defective electrical equipment and machinery such as motors,generators, transforn1ers, switches, sockets, and related items.
- Inspects and tests circuits and fixtures to locate broken wires, loose connections, blown fuses, faulty switches, grounds, shorts and other defects.
- Maintains records of wiring changes or modifications.
- Ensures that truck stock supplies are maintained at the proper level, requisitions supplies and materials.
- Estimates the cost of electrical work.
- Assists, in the performance of construction and remodeling projects for public buildings.
- Is crosstrained to provide back up assistance to other journeymen in the department.
- Performs other related work as required.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Work is performed throughout the city on a variety of buildings and facilities. Employee is required to stand, walk, talk, listen/hear, use hands, reach with arms and hands, and smell more than 2/3rd of the time; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl up to 2/3rd of the time; and sit up to 1/3rd of the time. Employee frequently lifts up to 100 lbs. Employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions no more than 1/3rd of the time; high places, confined spaces, up to 2/3rd of the time; and fumes or airborne particles, extremes of heat and cold, the risk of electric shock, near moving mechanical parts up to 1/3rd of the time. Equipment operated includes a light truck, automobile, light equipment, power tools, hand tools, electrical ohm test equipment such as meters, voltmeters, ammeters, growlers, and multimeters. Normal vision is required for the position.
Education and Experience
A candidate for this position should have a High School diploma or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience as a journeyman electrician and two (2) years experience in oil burner control wiring.
Special Requirements
A candidate for this position should have a Journeyman Electrician License as issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A candidate for this position should have knowledge of:
- State and local electrical and regulations
- Methods, tools, and techniques of the trade
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
Skill in:
- Diagnosing and repairing electrical malfunctions
- Use of hand tools, power equipment and testing devices of the trade such as meters, voltmeters, ammeters, growlers, and multimeters
And ability to:
- Read and interpret blueprints and specifications
- Perform the physical requirements of the position
- Work independently without supervision
- Perform routine maintenance tasks in the other building trades
