The Harvard Move Lab seeks a talented, creative, and enthusiastic individual to work with a team of engineers, researchers, designers, and clinicians to drive the innovation, evolution, and maintenance of a broad set of electrical and embedded software systems to enable research, product development, and technology translation efforts to build the foundations of emerging startups.
The Harvard Move Lab is assembling the tools, space, expertise, and relationships necessary to support entrepreneurial teams to launch new ventures and bring these innovations to life. The successful candidate will be joining an exciting innovation ecosystem in our new Science and Engineering Complex in Allston, next to the Harvard Business School (HBS) and the Harvard Innovation Labs. Position Description
- Manage research and development efforts related to embedded systems and contribute to software (C/C++ and Python).
- Work on development across common low-power microprocessor families (PIC, ARM, etc.).
- Review and maintain electrical hardware design (schematics, probe signals, and debug embedded systems) as part of ongoing system development, support, and optimization efforts.
- Collaborate with researchers on the implementation of real-time signal processing and control algorithms using various sensors and actuators.
- Participate in custom circuit design and PCB layouts in collaboration with other project team members and interface with outside vendors to perform detail design and fabricate necessary components.
- Maintain and improve the Move Lab electrical engineering facilities. This includes standard EE laboratory tools (oscilloscopes, power supplies, soldering stations), computer lab(s), and flexible design/project spaces. Assist in the development and updating of Standard Operating Procedures for all lab equipment.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of related work experience. Advanced education in a related field may count towards experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Experience with RTOS and embedded systems with hard real-time requirements
- Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and MATLAB
- Experience with communication protocols like SPI, I2C, CAN, UART and USB CAN, Bluetooth, and USB
- Knowledge in analog and digital circuit design, PCB layout, and device performance simulation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. In particular, competence in generating straightforward technical documentation such as lab procedures, protocols, and reports
- Ability to translate stakeholder input (e.g. from clinical partners, technical team, end users, and industry representatives) into high level and low level system requirements
- Strong organizational skills, creativity in problem solving, and high self-motivation. Ability and willingness to tackle multiple projects and perform effectively as part of a team and in a highly self-directed environment. Enthusiasm for supporting open-ended interdisciplinary engineering design projects
Bonus skills/experience:
- 6+ years of related experience
- Experience using embedded Linux
- Knowledge and experience working with manufacturing sources and component vendors
- Experience working in an active learning environment is a plus (hands-on skills teaching, tutoring, and/or mentoring)
Working Conditions
The work is performed in a lab environment. May occasionally be required to work outside of normal business hours.
