These TEMPORARY positions are with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Hines, Oregon.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill these positions at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,022-$4,465/mo.), as the department may consider under-filling the positions.

About the job
Work independently, as well as alongside conservation program and district staff to conduct pygmy rabbit presence surveys from vehicle and on foot.

Conduct meander transects through modeled pygmy rabbit habitat

Use knowledge on lagomorph ecology and behavior to discern potential pygmy rabbit presence through tracks, pellets, and burrows

Use GPS and collector to record pygmy rabbit burrow locations
-
Hike on rough terrain in remote areas to access survey locations and conduct surveys
-
Use 4WD trucks and ATVs to travel to remote locations of the study area, often over rough terrain.
Work independently, as well as alongside conservation program and district staff to set and maintain trail camera monitoring design for pygmy rabbits

Deploy trail cameras at selected burrow locations

Determine current pygmy rabbit presence through trail camera monitoring on selected burrow locations
Working Conditions:
- Work outdoors, at times during inclement weather.
- Operate ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), trucks, and other equipment.
- Must display a good sense of diplomacy when dealing with the public.
- Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.
- These positions require an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website:

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:
Fish & Wildlife Technician Option: ($3,022. - $4,465./mo)

An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology, Agriculture; or related field; OR
-
Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (Six months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry Option - Underfill: ($2,823. - $3,707./mo)
- Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification (there are no minimum qualifications). Previous related experience is desirable.
Requested Skills:
- Experience collecting biological data in the field.
- Experience working in remote areas.
