SALARY: Forester I: $23.30 - 27.02 | Forester II: $26.50 - 30.72 DOE

LOCATION: Inchelium, WA
Basic Functions: This is a professional Silviculturist and Planning position assigned to the Inchelium District on the Colville Indian Reservation involving specialized, technical forest management work. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical silvicultural direction and assistance to the Inchelium Forestry District staff and to provide, when necessary, coordination between other Natural Resource Department programs. Additionally, the silviculturist may provide assistance or act as the District Officer’s representative in matters related to silviculture or planning with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation (“Tribe”), individual Tribal membership, individual Indian Allotment landowners, other state or federal agencies, or the general public. Assignments involve developing and overseeing implementation of silvicultural prescriptions for many differing stand conditions within a multi-resource and intensive forest management program. The silviculturist is responsible for prescribing treatments (either delayed or current entry) on approximately 6,000 to 25,000 acres annually in the Inchelium District. Assignments require the silviculturist to interpret available data in terms of variables involved, the effect of proposed actions on other resources, and the rationale or concerns of the other (possibly conflicting) interests. The duties of this position require frequent contacts with Forestry Section Supervisors and field personnel, Branch Chiefs or Program Managers of Programs other than Forestry, Tribal Officials, Tribal Natural Resource Department staff, Tribal Forestry Staff, state and federal resource managers outside the BIA, technical specialists and researchers from universities, state, private, and federal organizations, and with BIA Northwest Regional Office (NWRO) resource specialists. The person occupying this position will be required to meet with individual Indian landowners, the general tribal membership of the Inchelium District, the Natural Resource Committee and the full Colville Business Council, the Inchelium District Cultural Advisory Board, representatives from the Colville Tribal Enterprises Corporation, and the general public.
Education and Training:
FORESTER I:
MINIMUM: Four-years undergraduate degree in Forestry, Forest Management, Natural Resource Management or closely related course of study.
FORESTER II
Four-years undergraduate degree in Forestry, Forest Management, Natural Resource Management or closely related course of study AND One (1) year of experience at the Forester I grade level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires Extensive knowledge of professional forestry principles, theories, and practices.
- Knowledge of all phases of timber management, presale, and other administrative activities.
- Extensive knowledge of wildland fire suppression techniques, and local policies and guideline regarding both wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire management.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outside environment, under all types of weather and terrain conditions.
- Ability to make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
- For log scaling, this requires the ability to calculate defect deductions using both scale stick numbers and mental Mathematical calculations.
- Knowledge and awareness of local Agency policy guidelines as they relate to forestry and other natural resource management activities.
- Knowledge of local Colville Indian Reservation forest habitat types, tree species, etc.Ability to keep, maintains, and updates District records involving the Colville Reservation tracking system and database.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and the ability to applied guidelines to vary and specific, complex situations.
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, as needed to meet work assignments.
- Overtime work is performed in accordance with pay restrictions outlined in the CCT Plan of Operations.
- Skill in the use of various manual and power tools and equipment used in forestry operations.
- Ability to use desktop computers and handheld programmable data collection machines used for traversing, spatial location, log scaling and timber cruising.
- Must be familiar with, and able to use commonly used software programs utilized by Forestry and other Natural Resource Departments.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.
If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
