Overview

The Kauai Humane Society (KHS) seeks an Adoption and Intake Specialist to assist with responding to and assisting the public via telephone, email, and in person. Assistance topics include, but are not limited to: lost pets, pet adoption on-island and off-island, fostering of shelter pets, public clinics for spay/neuter and vaccines, microchipping license ordinances and services, pet boarding services, end of life services for pets, etc.


This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and coverage on one, if not both weekend days is needed.

**Candidates already living on Kauai / a Hawaiian island or candidates who have established secured housing within the next 2 weeks are strongly preferred and will be given first consideration for the position.**


Adoption and Intake Specialist Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent is required.
  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s license, or valid out-of-state license, with a clear driving record for at least one year prior to application is required.
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working as an administrative assistant, social services or customer counseling position, or client services-related position is required.
  • Experience in working with, and confidence working to offer solutions to, upset customers is strongly preferred.
  • Competency to use computers, especially Microsoft Office or Google Suite products, and online database programs such as client scheduling software and/or animal/customer program databases, is required.
  • Animal handling and/or animal welfare industry experience is strongly preferred.

Adoption and Intake Specialist Essential Job Functions:

  • Receives and processes stray and relinquished animals.
  • Completes paperwork and computer software records for pet adoptions, pet boarding, and other Kauai Humane Society processes.
  • Assists in end-of-life services for pets, such as intake paperwork and discussions with owners regarding euthanasia and cremation.
  • Conducts animal adoption counseling and showcases animals for adoption.
  • Accepts and processes donations from clients and assists with in-kind donations.
  • Responds to telephone calls and emails from the public, on topics and services including but not limited to:
    • Shelter services such as spay/neuter surgery and vaccine clinics, pet food pantry sign up assistance, boarding for owned pets, lost pet reports, pet end-of-life services and counseling, KHS memberships and donations, adoption and foster opportunities.
    • Animal control services; may assign and dispatch calls to Humane Officers.
    • Interpretation and understanding of animal ordinances, field services procedures, and responsible animal ownership.
  • Must be able to deal with an emotionally charged public and carry a fast-paced and changing workload which at times can be stressful.
  • Must agree to work in an environment and understands that, by nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to injured, sick, deceased, and/or difficult animals with varying health concerns.
  • Completes cleaning of public areas daily and ongoing throughout the day.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Adoption and Intake Specialist Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work with both dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties.
  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
  • Must be able to chase or run after animals that might escape confinement.
