POSITION SUMMARY:

Simply Home’s Head Cashier is responsible for assisting the Store Manager with overseeing all cashiers to assure that customers receive prompt, friendly, and accurate service at the check out stand. Leadership duties include providing on the job training, counseling, and feedback to all cashiers. Additionally, this includes maintaining a cash register and assisting customers with all purchases, refunds, exchanges, and other related needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists store management with the overall performance of the front-end including customer service, scheduling, security, and training of all cashiers. Ensures proper coverage at the cashwrap is maintained at all times.

  • Ensures that the store is secure upon entering and exiting and the alarm is disarmed upon entering and set upon exiting. Observes key carrying rules and responsibilities. Secures the safe, cash room, and manager’s office upon exit. Reports any safety or security issues immediately to the proper authority.

  • Assures that all customers are greeted in an expeditious and courteous manner. This includes assisting customers by ringing up their merchandise, stating the amount due, processing transactions according to the type of payment, returning proper amount due and thanking the customer for their service. Assures that customers are notified of merchandise received for rain checks, special orders, etc.

  • Ensures the cashiers are answers incoming calls to the store and articulating the proper information to the customer. Trains cashiers on proper processes for directing calls to the requested party, taking accurate and complete messages, and/or relaying the necessary information to the caller. Makes sure each cashier handles each call in a professional, courteous and timely manner.

  • Assists cashiers with the handling of customer complaints and difficult questions. Assists all customers by answering questions and directing them to the proper area of the store or paging for assistance. Assures that customers are informed of applicable exchange, refund or other pertinent information related to purchased items. Assists cashiers with approvals for discounts, refunds, (except employee and damaged merchandise) voids, credit returns, rain checks, incoming purchase orders for Simply Home charges, and will call items.

  • Supports all promotions and special programs initiated by Simply Home. Upholds and carries out the company’s philosophy and image of quality and service. Maintains a clean and orderly workspace. This includes monitoring and taking appropriate action for misplaced items, obstructions in the nearby aisles, moisture on the floor (especially on rainy days) and other unsafe conditions that may arise.

  • Restocks supplies, advertisements, and other necessary items in the cashwrap area. Notifies management when running low on certain items. As time allows, assists fellow teammates with maintaining other sections of the store. Maintains continuous awareness of all activity within the assigned area. This includes discretely monitoring unattended customers and taking appropriate action when suspicious activity is observed of customers, as well as fellow-team members. Attends store meetings, training sessions, etc. as arranged by the Company.

  • Assures that the proper amount of cash and coins are on hand for replenishing registers, in accordance with company guidelines. Maintains adequate amount of cash and coins in registers, including pulling excess cash and logging pulled amount in accordance with procedures. Oversees the closing out of cashiers at the end of a shift in accordance with policies and procedures, this includes completing necessary paperwork, balancing all cash drawers, and properly securing funds. Manages the cash fund, controls gift certificates and merchandise credit vouchers, conducts safe counts, prepares daily deposits and authorizes refunds. Maintains security alert notices. Assures that reports and files are properly maintained, including an over/short report for each cashier.

  • Assists store management with overseeing the performance of all cashiers. Assures that all cashiers are properly trained and receive proper feedback in accordance with company policies and procedures. Assists the store manager with recommending information to be used in performance evaluations as well as disciplinary action as needed. Assures that all cashiers and applicable team members are kept well informed of all company policies and procedures, especially when changes are implemented.

  • Creates and maintains vehicles for communicating information in a timely and effective manner to various user departments, including conducting meetings, setting deadlines, and maintaining user-friendly procedures.

  • Maintains constant awareness of all unsafe activities. Reports unsafe working conditions and accidents immediately to the proper authority. Fully cooperates with all investigations. Assists store management with assuring that all equipment is operated in accordance with safety standards. Maintains policies and procedures for assuring a safe and healthy environment for all team members. Immediately notifies proper authority of any accident or suspicious activities. Immediately completes and submits proper documentation of all accidents. Assures that cashiers receive proper notice off all ad changes, errors, omissions, etc., in an expeditious manner.

  • Maintains register end caps. Ensures cash register supplies are constantly available. Reports all problems pertaining to pricing of merchandise immediately to appropriate supervisor or manager. Assures that all equipment within assigned department(s) is well maintained by informing store management of necessary cleaning of equipment, malfunctions, breakage repairs, and recommendations for replacing or upgrading equipment.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides assistance to other team members as needed.

  • Assists with training other team members.

  • Oversees shopping cart or other equipment retrieval. This includes delegating and assisting with collecting shopping carts and picking up rubbish.

  • Maintains flexibility in learning other functions throughout the store.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, regulations, and issues applicable to retail industry. Maintains a clear understanding of how each law and regulation applies to the day-to-day responsibilities of this position.

  • Maintains a thorough knowledge and understanding of general business, office and departmental procedures, including all Company policies and procedures as they apply to this position.

  • Improves and maintains technical competencies by reading professional literature, attending seminars and specialized studies, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school degree. Associates degree preferred.

  • Minimum of two (2) years customer service experience, which include twelve continuous months of customer service or home improvement product knowledge position(s) i.e., construction industry, landscaping, etc. preferably in a hardware or home improvement setting.

  • Minimum of two (2) years cashiering experience.

  • Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience, preferred.

  • Demonstrated history of consistent, reliable attendance

OTHER SKILLS:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including listening. Must be able to project a clear and friendly voice.

  • Proven ability to train, evaluate and take appropriate action with subordinates.

  • Excellent customer service (both external and internal) and telephone skills. Must be able to smile and maintain a positive disposition, even when faced with difficult situations.

  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain a high degree of accuracy, especially when the lines are long or the system goes down. Must be able to work effectively with difficult customers and work effectively with distractions.

  • Well organized and attentive to detail. Must be able to handle cash register, answer phones, and assist customers in effective and positive manner.

  • Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

  • Proven ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must be able to balance register and assist cashiers with balancing, in a timely manner.

  • Ability to operate a cash register, calculator, telephone, and personal computer, as needed.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

WORKING CONDITIONS/JOB ENVIRONMENT:

This position works in a retail store environment with the following characteristics:

Air conditioning

Warehouse with moderately high levels of dust and noise.

This position will be required to work evenings and weekends as the workload dictates.

While the company will strive to provide advance notice of all work schedules, this position will be required to work a varied schedule as the workload dictates. No head cashier is guaranteed a specific shift, day of the week, or number of hours per week.
