About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Graduate School of Education Associate Dean, the CPS IRB Coordinator is responsible for working with principal investigators and student investigators in applying regulations to safeguard the rights and welfare of research participants and is responsible for understanding and making appropriate application of federal and state regulations for the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects at the University, and in particular, the College of Professional Studies (CPS). The IRB coordinator is responsible for managing professional development related to IRB, tracking and monitoring of IRB applications and associated documents, as well as conducting IRB application review for CPS faculty, staff, and students.
The position involves proactive communication with Northeastern University Research Regulatory Compliance as well as the CPS community to assist faculty, staff and students in preparing human subject research protocols and to educate research staff, deans, department directors, investigators, administrators and students as a means of maintaining a high level of awareness regarding the ethical conducts of research and safeguarding human participants.
75% - CPS IRB Coordinator
Initial review of CPS protocols with human subjects. Review all CPS research with human subjects and work with investigators toward ensuring that all research procedures are conducted in accordance with federal regulations and university policies. When process is complete, protocol is ready to be approved by Chair of the Northeastern University Institutional Review Board (NUIRB), or to be reviewed by the board of the NU IRB, as appropriate.
Make independent decisions relative to 1) the categorization of the type of review that a protocol may require (exempt, expedited or full board); and 2) assessing and mandating specific revisions before a project can be approved. This endeavor also requires working closely with the faculty member or student who may be named as the Principal Investigator.
- Monitor all CPS IRB submissions to ensure completion, quality, adherence to policy, and submission timelines.
- Reviews student milestone completion to ensure eligibility for IRB
- In collaboration with IRB, CPS leadership and program leadership, develop and maintain CPS IRB operational systems.
- Collaborate with the IRB team on processes, procedures, and policies in order to ensure consistent implementation across CPS.
- Work with leaders of doctoral programs to ensure students’ needs are met within the IRB and research process.
- Serve as the primary IRB contact and liaison for CPS.
- Tracks and monitors and reports on CPS IRB submissions by stakeholder type
- Collaborates with faculty PIs and program directors that have IRB submissions
25% - CPS Research Ethics Training and Development
Responsible for ongoing education of CPS faculty and students relative to the ongoing process of protocol development and any changes in the regulations that may affect how these are applied. This includes but is not limited to the development of online training, workshops, one-on-one guidance with investigators and/or student researchers.
- Host IRB related trainings for online courses and in-person gatherings
- Works in collaboration with faculty to add IRB trainings and modules to courses
- Provides individual consultation to CPS faculty and students on research ethics and IRB applications
Qualifications:
BS or BA with demonstrated experience in research design and/or human subject research. Must be located in commuting proximity to one of the US based campuses.
Candidates should have a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a higher educational setting though relevant experience in other fields will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the social sciences, however, applicants with relevant experience in the sciences and humanities will be considered.
- Must be highly collaborative and able to work well with multiple constituencies: students, faculty, academic coordinators, and program offices from Deans to support staff.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- Teamwork and strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Attention to detail a must.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills required.
