Law Enforcement Officer I - Corporal Job at Laurel Ridge Community College
Responsive to the safety and security needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff and students and visitors at a multi-campus college.
Protect life and property and enforce laws of the Commonwealth and the rules and regulations of the college within the appropriate jurisdictional parameters. To serve the college community by providing professional and efficient police and safety services.
The primary purpose of the position is to provide for the safety and security of people
and property within the jurisdictional parameters of the position. Concurrently, the position has the vital purpose of advancing the college’s mission and image as a dynamic and positive academic environment.
Position may be required to work at any/all campuses and to travel off-site in the course of fulfilling the duties of the position .
Duties:
- Observe and take action as needed to maintain the safety and security of people and property within jurisdictional parameters.
- Unlock and lock campus facilities in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Patrol and inspect the buildings and all areas of the campus facilities and grounds, including all campus parking lots utilizing effective community oriented policing and crime prevention practices.
- Respond to calls for service in a timely manner.
- Investigate complaints and prepare investigative reports.
- Coordinate with the local Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to ensure proper court preparation.
- Testify in court or judicial hearings during the adjudication process.
- Enforce state laws, as well as policies and procedures of the college.
- Contact local law enforcement agencies, as necessary to obtain their assistance in enforcement.
- Assist in emergency evacuations of buildings during test drills and actual emergencies.
- Collect, package and secure investigatory evidence in accordance with process and procedures published by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS).
- Collect and secure abandoned items in accordance with the department’s Lost & Found policies.
- Assist students, faculty, staff and visitors by providing information regarding parking regulations, building/classroom/office locations, campus safety security procedures, etc.
- Respond to requests from staff, faculty and students for a variety of services, including unlocking and locking doors
- Escorting individuals to parking lots/campuses.
- Issue parking permits, ID’s, and other departmental or college forms as directed.
- Make bank deposits upon requests from the Business Office.
- Assist fellow officers, other members of college staff, as well as other departments in a professional, courteous manner.
- Communicate with and assist neighboring law enforcement agencies and other agencies.
- Complete necessary documentation in a clear, concise, timely manner.
- Issue summonses or citations for violations of campus parking and traffic regulations.
- Monitor the college electronic security monitoring systems (CCTV and Alarms Systems) as needed.
- Check e-mails daily and respond when needed.
- Work with limited supervision.
- Issue communication messages through “phone top”, P/A System, megaphone and/or in-person as necessary.
- Perform criminal and non-criminal investigations as directed by the Chief of Police to include but not limited to performing interviews, interrogations, background reference checks, reviewing written and electronic data, and performing other investigative tasks.
- Assist the Chief of Police with administrative duties to include but not limited to maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies such as the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Virginia Criminal Information Network/National Crime Information Center (VCIN/NCIC), Incident Based Reporting system (IBR), etc.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Must be certified or willing to complete all legal and regulatory requirements to become certified as a law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must maintain law enforcement officer certification to include completing the minimum in-service education requirements established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS.)
- Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Must possess considerable knowledge of law enforcement, as well as security and safety concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Must possess considerable knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
- Must demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately handle agency-issued weapons and qualify annually in the use of agency-issued firearms and less-than-lethal weapons in accordance with the minimum standards established by DCJS and the department.
- Must demonstrate the ability to operate a department motor vehicle safely.
- Must demonstrate the ability to give clear oral and written instructions to elicit compliance with law, policies, and regulations in both routine and emergency situations.
- Must be able to gather information and write factual reports.
- Must be able to testify truthfully and factually in legal hearings and court.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude as defined in Code of Virginia § 15.2-1705
- Must not have been terminated from a sworn law enforcement position for lying, unnecessary use of force, or sexual misconduct.
- Must be willing to travel between multiple LAUREL RIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE locations and work various shifts.
- Successful completion of background check and drug screening is required.
- Must have a high school education or equivalent
- Must have a valid driver’s license recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
- Possess current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or be willing to complete training at the convenience and direction of the Chief of Police.
- Two or more years of investigative experience.
- DCJS Instructor Certifications.
- Proven academic excellence and subject matter knowledge, which may be evidenced by training, experience, and/or an associate degree.
