Purpose of the job

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for maintaining production equipment, utilities, and facilities for producing high quality Dyneema products in the most cost-effective manner, according to the site maintenance strategy, while maintaining excellent safety, human relations, and environmental standards.


Job Context

The Maintenance Supervisor will support the Fiber/Life Protection/Medical manufacturing departments and the Process/Project engineering departments. Direct the daily maintenance activities within their assigned production area(s) as well as to ensure production and quality goals are achieved. Drive to achieve and maintain “World Class Maintenance Philosophy” and ensure that their assigned maintenance group(s) follows APM Manufacturing Excellence guidelines.

Key Areas of Accountability / Responsibility

1. All employees have the responsibility to:

4. Ensure that the SHE objectives, plans and requirements are communicated and understood in the organization. Support and/or organize employee involvement with setup and review of SHE plans, requirements, procedures, and instructions. Provide necessary training and ensure that employee competencies are sufficient to allow them to perform their task in a SHE responsible way. Supervise and mentor employees to ensure they have the knowledge and training to perform the duties of their position and all other associated roles in a (SHE) responsible way. Support and enforce the policy of reporting incidents to include possible SHE incidents and investigations. Encourage suggestions for possible improvements and ensure the risks of the work are assessed regularly/routinely. Perform routine observations and audits of employees to ensure that all procedures and instructions are adhered to and effective. Follow proper procedures and instructions. Demonstrate SHE leadership by setting standards, organizing involvement, and encouraging employees to act (SHE) responsible for their well-being. Encourage colleagues and management to improve SHE results and prevent incidents. Encourage and ensure that the organization is in compliance with legislative and company requirements.

5. Abides by Avient Protective Materials procedures/policies regarding security, inclusive of employee security agreements; use of non-disclosure agreements with outside parties; control of Avient Protective Materials intellectual property limited to a “need to know” only basis; no unauthorized use of cell phones, cameras, computers, or Avient Protective Materials property; reporting security threats and incidents; proper control of Avient Protective Materials property and keys.

6. Lead a team of maintenance personnel to provide optimal operation and maintenance of the Fiber/Life Protection/Medical business groups. Directly manage performance of Maintenance Group Lead(s), E/I Mechanics, Mechanical Mechanics, Maintenance Planner(s), and/or Utility Technicians.

7. Improve and lead the maintenance organization by performing predictive, preventative, and proactive maintenance analysis as well as designing and implementing long-term continuous improvement applications and systems to enhance maintenance reliability.

8. Assist Maintenance Manager with developing and managing the maintenance budget(s). Work with management to review monthly maintenance and site expense reports for budgetary compliance. Investigate and resolve significant variances/problems. Create and manage production and Site budgets involving maintenance, utilities, buildings, and facilities. Facilitate an environment of teamwork within the Fiber/Life Protection/Medical operating areas between production and all other support groups. Provide necessary resources for all teams to fulfill their objectives. Encourage maintenance and all other team members to understand corporate and departmental goals/objectives and needs. Provide supervisory communication and/or direction to the maintenance and production staff members. Disseminate needed divisional, unit and corporate information to employees on a timely basis. Establish and maintain an open line of communication with all employees.

9. Provide continuous improvement input to the Production Manager(s) and the Maintenance Manager during development of maintenance and operational goals to support divisional, unit, and corporate objectives. Initiate and implement plans to reduce COGS by continuously improving efficiencies, processing times, reducing labor and material costs, reducing maintenance costs, and controlling expense budgets.

10. Maintains and operators manufacturing and support equipment/facilities (HVAC, Air compressors, Hot Oil Systems, Boilers, Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO), Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), Buildings, Grounds, and the Solvent Recovery column (SRA)) to produce the highest quality product in a cost-effective manner.

11. Evaluate performance of staff members, conduct performance evaluations, and administer performance management.

12. A technical resource with Process and Project Engineering to assess manufacturing capacity and the need to upgrade facilities to meet regulatory requirements and process improvements.

13. Manage indirectly Maintenance Planners, Utility Technicians, and/or provide coaching to salary staff.

14. Executes and Implements Improved Plant (IP), Management of Change (MOC) and Small Project activities.

15. Create, review, and approve Fiber/Life Protection/Medical maintenance work instructions and /or Standard Operating Procedures.

16. Identify, troubleshoot, and correct environmental issues that are non-compliant. Promote waste reduction and recovery projects and incorporate associated operations in applicable manufacturing processes. Ensure staff is trained on current waste disposal procedures and prevention procedures. Identify opportunities to minimize waste and to recycle.

17. Ensure all work is conducted in a safe and effective manner and all applicable procedures and policies are followed. Take action to correct unsafe acts, systems, and procedures.

18. It is the responsibility of each employee to work in a safe and responsible manner to create an injury-free and incident-free workplace.

19. Comply with all job-related safety and other training requirements.

20. Maintain annual training requirements on hazardous waste by reviewing DYNPRO SHE DYN 653 and general awareness presentation. Specific job holders will complete more detailed training as well.

21. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Authorized to approve work permits per details included in DYNPRO SHE DYN 026. If so authorized, employee must maintain necessary refresher training to participate in these activities (Up to Level 3B)
  • Operational Excellence roles
  • SAP Roles (as required)
  • Manage Management of Change and/or Small Projects

Complexity of the job

  • Responsible for up to 10-million-dollar budget for Site and Maintenance activities.
  • Management and Maintenance Related knowledge, ability to handle multiple ongoing activities, and prioritize tasks.
  • DSM associates and management – Interact with multidisciplinary teams to ensure expectations are met.
  • Interact with all staff locally within Avient Protective Materials, globally within Avient Protective Materials, Corporate Avient Protective Materials, external vendors, contractors, and customer.

Knowledge and educational level

BS/BA in related technical field with 5 years of relevant experience; OR associate degree in related technical field with 6 years of relevant experience OR 7 years of maintenance related experience.


Required level of experiences

  • Ability to create budgets and forecast cost for production equipment, utilities, facilities, and buildings on an annual basis.
  • Ability to effectively manage team performance and to identify developmental opportunities for team members.
  • Firm understanding of maintenance planning and scheduling activities.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related Fiber/Life Protection/Medical maintenance and production activities.
  • Ability to drive improvements in production equipment reliability and to minimize equipment down time.
  • Knowledge of Avient Protective Materials corporate requirements for IER, Maintenance, and MRO.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Skillful in Microsoft Outlook and use for tasks, meetings, and other organizational tools.
  • Able to coordinate team efforts and keep the group informed and organized.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a variety of departments and resolve conflicts.
  • Experience in maintenance support and/or reliability engineering.
